Fox Lake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. It was named for Captain James Fox of the United States Volunteers during the American Civil War. Fox Lake is located in the Catskills region of New York State. The first settlers in what is now Fox Lake were farmers who arrived in 1837 from Maine. They used their land to raise corn and wheat and also built a few homes. In 1853, three men by the name of Geer, Waterman and Smith bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land around present-day Fox Lake from Jonas Backus. They started a farm which they named "Cook's Purchase". The first store in what is now Fox Lake opened on October 15, 1853., by Jephson Capps and his brother-in-law Amos Butterfield Jr.. Mr. Capps sold insurance products there until 1896 when he moved to Carbondale, Illinois to open his own store there. In 1898, George Wirths added an additional 350 acres (160 hectares) to the original 640 acres . This made FoxLake one of the largest townships in Cook County at that time with over 12,000 residents! In 1901–1902 Captain John Aiken founded what would become known as "Aiken's Gunsmith Shop" on property adjacent to where today's Post Office sits on North Main Street near Lakeshore Drive - serving as both a business and community center for years until it became closed down due to fire in 2006! The shop was also home to local rifle shooting events throughout its tenure; such as those held annually at Aiken Park between 1951 and 1978 featuring top IPSC shooters from all across America! In 1907 Captain John Aiken donated land east of where Cooks Purchase once stood for use as a public school district!. Named after him – "Fox Lake Elementary School District" – this gift helped changefoxlake into one of Illinois' most vibrant communities! In 1844, a group of settlers from Michigan arrived and started trading with the Potawatomi Indians. One of these traders, John Gossett, built a cabin here and called it Gossett's Grove after himself and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Gossett (the father of Colonel George Gossett). In 1847, another group of settlers from Michigan moved into this area and began trading with the Potawatomi Indians again. They called their settlement Bellefontaine because they had seen a shipwreck there that had been used as an ammo store by the Indian tribe known as the La Salleans. In 1849, when Indiana became a United States state, Fox Lake became part of Cook County. There were many challenges faced by early residents when Indiana joined forces with Illinois to form one country: food shortages led to rioting in 1830; timber concessions were awarded without proper bidding process; railroad construction disturbed traditional fishing grounds; taxes on goods exported increased markedly; water supplies were manifoldly compromised through overgrazing and canalization projects; agricultural production failed to meet soaring demand due to lack of irrigation systems orIrrigation districts being established too late) However these problems eventually dissipated as trade flourished between Cook County locals and Stephenson & Company merchants shipping out goods destined for Chicago along then newly constructed railroads which connected all parts of America
