Fox Lake is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,986 at the 2010 census. Fox Lake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Fox Lake was named after General John Fenton Fox who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a Justice of the Peace for McHenry County. The first settler in this area was Nicholas Hickey who arrived in 1824. In 1846, Isaac Sibley opened a mill here which became one of the largest small mills in Illinois and continued to be run until it closed in 1914. In addition to its milling operations, Sibley also operated a gristmill and sawmill here. The Village of Fox Lake was organized on April 16, 1915 from parts of Elgin Township and Rockford Township. At that time it consisted of 907 acres (313 ha). The original name for the village was "Hillsboro." Lake Michigan Sound provided power for both these early mills as well as many others during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century when electricity became more common across America. Today only two remnants remain from those earlier days: an old water tower with an observation deck atop it still standing (now used by Lakeshore Airpark) and an abandoned four-story brick factory complex which once housed two blast furnaces; both are now gone but their foundations survive as part of intermittent rural development around town today. On October 17, 1932, Fox Lake had its first election as aVillage under Village Law No. 2145 A&C v1-2 which established term limits for all Village members then serving terms expiring on December 31st following that year's general election results - George Taylor being elected President with 57% of votes cast followed by Maurice Kapp with 44%. On November 15th 1933 Village Manager George Willard resigned effective December 1st due to ill health after serving 3 years with distinction; his replacement Wm Jourdain took office January 1st 1934 having been appointed by Authority of law No. 2145 A&C v1-2 upon receipt of nomination from Mayor James Foleyhammer Jr..
