Fox Lake is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census. Fox Lake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1857, John Saginaw and his brother-in-law Nicholas Biddle founded the town of Fox Lake on land they had bought from the Sauk people. John Saginaw became its first mayor and built a wharf toexport goods from the village to Chicago. In 1870, FoxLake became a city with a population of 10,000. The first mayor was George Aiken. In 1907, FoxLake's water supply was poisoned by an oil well and it lost its status as a city; it remains a rural municipality today. Fox Lake has been home to many famous athletes including Jesse Owens (a track & field athlete), Mike Tyson (a boxer), Billie Jean King (a tennis player), Phil Mickelson (the world's top golfer) and Serena Williams (the world's most successful women's tennis player).

The Village of Fox Lake was originally built on what is now the south side of Main Street inFox Lake. It was home to many farmers and their families who irrigated their crops using water from the river below. In 1957, when Illinois became an effective state, it merged with neighboring Indiana to form one new state called Illinois. At that time, the Village of FoxLake became part of Springfield Township in Springfield County. Today, there are still many people living inFoxLake who have contributed greatly to its history. Many residents continue to irrigate their crops using water from the river below or use public transportation to get around town.
Fox Lake was founded in 1847 by John Fox. The town was named for him and his father, General James Fox. The first post office was established in 1848. In 1865, the village of Fox Lake merged with the township of Appleton to form the present-day Fox Lake Township.
