Fox Lake is a small community in the northwest corner of Illinois, about 20 miles from Chicago. The population was 7,500 at the 2000 census. Fox Lake was first settled in 1848 by Bloomington farmers. The community became a post office in 1851 and a village in 1892. In 1906, Fox Lake became a town and remained so until 1959 when it became a rural district. Custer and his soldiers died at Red Cloud's camp near present-day Elmwood Village before being liberated six days later. This event is sometimes referred to as "the battle of White Pines." The town of Fox Lake was established around this time, although it never reached its current size due to difficulties getting water tootes (ponds) needed for irrigation purposes from nearby creeks. However, becauseof its strategic location - just east of Moberly - Fox Lake continued to grow rapidly during World War II as people Flowed into the area for military service or worked on manufacturing plants located closer away in Moberly or Rockford County. During peacetime, however, many residents relocated back home because insurance rates had increased so much since World War II had ended! Today, fox hunting is still an important part of local culture here in fox lake and there are also some farmers who keep ponies and other animals for agricultural reasons only; these activities do not generate as much economic activity as trade goods might have done centuries ago given today’s global economy!
