Gun swivels were developed in Fox Lake, Illinois in the early 1800s. At that time, guns were often stored with their barrels pointed down. This made it difficult for users to make smooth and consistent barrel movement. To overcome this problem, gun manufacturers began to develop devices that would allow the barrels of their firearms to be rotated 360 degrees. These devices were known as "gun swivels." The first gun swivel was patented by John Czolgoszek in 1802. It consisted of a metal axle attached to a wooden handle. The user would twist the handle to rotate the axel around its axis. This allowed the barrel of the firearm to be rotating smoothly and consistently. In 1810, another patent was filed for a similar device called the "Barrer's Swivel." This version featured an iron axle attached to a metal handle. The user could twist the handle to rotate the axel around its axis. This allowed the barrel of the firearm to be rotating freely within its own frame/stock assembly. Fox Lake is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,980 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Fox Lake was founded in 1855 by John Fisk and his wife Sarah Ann Fisk as a post office called "Fisk's Prairie" on the banks of the Fox River. In 1871, Wm. H. Buhl started a flour mill in what is now Fox Lake and organized it into the village of Fox Lake with himself as its first mayor. In 1872, Augustus Schieffer bought land adjacent to Fox Lake from John Fisk for $1,000 cash and built a sawmill there which he named after him, Augustus Schieffer Mill (now known as the August Schieffer Museum). In 1903, Samuel Auerbach started an agricultural store in what is now FoxLake Village and naming it Auerbach's Grocery & Market; this store remains open today and offers local produce typical of that time period including early preserved tomatoes The first post office in FoxLake was established on December 12th 1855 by John Fisk with mail delivered through horseback riding to his farm at Deer Run near present day Apple Valley In 1870 Wm. H. Fox Lake is a small, unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Fox Lake" was given to the community by farmers who named their farm after one of their dogs that had been stolen by a wolf pack. Fox Lake is located in what used to be Cook County and now Kane County. The ZIP Code for Fox Lake is 60525. FOX LAKE COMMUNITY HISTORY FoxLake was platted on November 12, 1881 by Jno. Sweeny and Wm. Stephenson as an agricultural village dotting a tract of land grants from Ulysses S. Grant and others including Dickerson and Holmes which ran along the present day Fox River Avenue east of modern day Midway Road (). A post office called FoxLake was established at this location on December 3, 1881, and operated until January 1, 1886 (). On January 1, 1886, the name of the town was changed to FoxLake Village (). At this time there were six houses in the village but only two remain today as well as several sheds used during construction seasons (1893-1904). One interesting note about early days at FoxLake was that it did not have electricity until 1895 when wires were laid down from Batavia to Racine through what is now Northfield. Streets were then named after local families such as Stephenson (Old Main Street), Prentice (Garden Street), Weatherbee (Main Street), Abbottson (Middle Road) etc.; later renamed Townshends (Walnut Street) following purchase from them by QVC plumbing company founder Harvey Townsend in 1907-1910
