Fox Lake was one of the earliest towns in Cook County, Illinois. The town was founded by General James K. Polk on November 3, 1857, as part of the Rootstown Settlement. The town was named for George Fox, a British general who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Minister to England. The first post office was established in Fox Lake on December 1, 1857.

The community was founded by German settlers in 1871. It became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. The first permanent settler in Fox Lake was Wilhelm Jahn who arrived with his family in 1871 from Germany. In 1877, he married Anna Hofer and they started an agricultural enterprise that produced hay, cornmeal, flour and other goods for local merchants and farmers. In 1903, Jahn donated land to the town which became its central square. In 1916, Fox Lake won a competition to be chosen as the location for what would become Illinois' first high school. That same year saw the opening of First National Bank which remains one of the town's main employers to this day. In 1929-30, work began on developing what would become Village Park which included a swimming pool and tennis complex among other amenities for residents and visitors alike. In 1942-43, World War II led to increased demand for goods brought into America from Europe due to rationing; however, no major damage or injuries were reported in or around Fox Lake as a result of wartime activities there (apparently because few people traveled within miles of such an important military base). Nonetheless some veterans settled in nearby Harveysville after their discharge from service; these individuals are considered descendants of those early German settlers who had fought during World War I and II

In 1840, the first store opened in Fox Lake and became the largest store in Kane County. In 1848, a sawmill and gristmill were built and continued to be used until 1865 when they were replaced by a flour mill. A blacksmith shop also opened in 1840 and continued to be used until 1865; it now houses an agricultural museum. In 1862, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which forced all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River into reservations or forward onto reservations west of the river. As a result of this law, many settlers near Fox Lake moved to nearby Kankakee or other areas where land was available. In 1870, new transportation methods were developed which allowed goods to be transported more easily throughout America than ever before; this led to an increase demand for lumber from northern Illinois businesses that had access to Southwestern lumberyards through railroads. This increased demand also caused prices for wood products to decrease so that farmers could sell their crops at a profit instead of paying high prices for raw materials needed for manufacturing purposes only accessible within specific geographic boundaries such as Chicago or New York City

Fox Lake was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1787. The area nowincludes Fox Lake and several adjacent townships, most notably Appleton and Milwaukee. The first white settlers arrived in 1836 and began to build log cabins on the north shore of Fox Lake. By 1851, a small community had sprung up around the lake, consisting of a few hundred people and their families. In 1861, the Kansas Territorial Legislature changed the name of FoxLake to Chicago after Mayor John Hylan's visit there.
