Fox Lake was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, until the late 1960s when it became one of the most violent communities in America. The violence began with the introduction of handguns to Fox Lake in the early 1960s by its new mayor, Harry "Hap" Dearborn. The weapon quickly became popular among local gangsters and criminals and soon there were multiple gun shops located throughout Fox Lake. The popularity of handguns led to an increase in shootings and homicides in Fox Lake. In 1965, Mayor Dearborn introduced a bill into the Illinois State Legislature that would have made it a felony for anyone under 18 years old to purchase or possess any handgun without having first obtained a license from their city or village police department. However, this measure was vetoed by Governor George Ryan because he felt that such measures would only create more crime and violence. In 1969, another veto by Governor Ryan resulted in a new law being introduced into the Illinois State Legislature that allowed citizens to carry unloaded handguns on their persons as long as they had an appropriate sheriff's permit (which at that time was not required). This law also created a loophole allowing people with concealed handgun permits from other states who wanted to bring their firearms into state to shoot targets at ranges within Illinois. This legislation gained national attention because it provided legal cover for gun manufacturers who wished to sell guns directly to Americans without going through licensed dealers. Governor Ryan's veto of this bill marked the beginning of what is now known as "the Gun Wars." The Gun Wars were characterized by high-profile assassinations (most notably those of Patrice Lumumba and John Lennon), mass shootings (such as Columbine High School), and wide-scale political corruption involving government officials with links to organized crime groups. Ultimately, these events led to increased regulation of firearms by both state legislatures and federal agencies alike.

They brought with them their own church and cemetery there. In 1812, the village of Fox Lake was organized by fur traders from Canada as a trading post on the Illinois River system. In 1836, it became an incorporated village under the name of Racine after Racine, Wisconsin, which had been founded by Canadian fur traders in 1835 as a trading post on the Milwaukee River system. The village had two stores and a school when it became part of Chicago in 1896. Fox Lake has always been an agricultural community with many farms specializing in corn, soybeans, dairy products and other vegetables grown for local consumption or export to other countries. A few businesses have closed but most residents still visit their farms and businesses that remain open today including: ABC grocery store; bank; barber shop; gas station; Methodist Church (dedicated to Godfrey Silliman); ice cream parlor (now defunct); pizza place; restaurant (now defunct); and fireworks store

Fox Lake is a small village in Kane County, Illinois, on the Fox River. The name comes from a Ojibwe word meaning "big water". The village was founded in 1854 by mechanics and their families who arrived from Northwestern Minnesota to work on the new railroad. The Village of Fox Lake was incorporated in 1887. The village was named for General George Washington Fox, American Revolutionary War general and signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1865, General George W. Smith laid out what is now the north side of Fox Lake and named it after him. It was also during this time that early businesses such as the Blacksmith Shop and Livery stable were located here. The Village of Fox Lake experienced significant growth following World War II when many manufactures moved to nearby towns such as Aurora or Rockford due to wartime demand for goods produced in Illinois. After years of decline, however,Village population peaked at 1,200 in 2000 before gradually declining over the next several decades due to various factors including changes in demographics and development around town; suburbanization; decreasing school enrollments; and competition from other villages within Kane County (most notably West Dundee). As late as 2006 there remained only about 100 residents living withinFoxLake proper while more than 500 people lived within its annexed limits which include parts of neighboring White Oak Township

The town of Fox Lake was renamed Appleton in 1907 and then Moline in 1908. Moline was renamed to Bloomington in 1924. Bloomington became a city in 1951 and has since grown into one of the largest cities in the Midwest.
