In 1881, a man named John D. Fox purchased a forge and hammer shop in what is now Fox Lake, Illinois. The shop was used to make shotguns, pistols and other firearms. In 1919, the shop was renamed the Fox Lake Gun & Hammer Armory, and continued to produce firearms until it closed in 1984. The arsenal had an impressive collection of artillery weaponry from both World War I and World War II. Many of these weapons are still on display at the armory today. In addition to its guns and munitions, the armory also functioned as a training ground for army officers during World War II.

In 1849, George Washington Carver founded Carver America Corporation here with his brother John as president and Cushman as secretary treasurer. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge announced that he would be traveling through Macomb County on his way to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for a speech given at Gettysburg College on November 6th that year. When he got to Fox Lake late on Saturday night, he stopped for dinner at Mr Hickey's restaurant which was then known as "The Keg". After dinner, he walked around the lakeshore before going into town for a reception at Mrs Hickey's house which was also known as "The Keg". At 9:00 pm Saturday night local time (November 5th), President Coolidge died when his car ran out of gas near White Sands National Monument while driving back from Gettysburg College after visiting several other places within
