It is located on the Fox River north of Grand Crossing and south of Wadsworth. The village was founded in 1857 by John Prentice and others as a small community on the west bank of the Fox River opposite present-day Waukegan. The name "Fox" came from an early settler's dog which he named "Fox." In 1875, when Waukegan was incorporated as a town, Fox Lake became part of that town. In 1893, after being annexed by Crystal City in Kane County, Fox Lake becameCrystal City's only Village Park with 2 golf courses (one for men only), tennis courts and a boat dock/locker rental business. In 1954 it merged with neighboring Wadsworth to form what is now known as FoxLakeVillage or simply "FoxLake". On November 5th 1917 foxes were spotted near Crabapple Lane & Koster Road between Crystal City & Wadsworth; this sighting led to widespread public attention and soon locals had started calling themselves 'the foxes'. That year they also built their first dam to generate power for their homes – both were destroyed within a few years but raised again in 1927 when new dams were built upstream just north of Crabapple Lane & Koster Road: these created most of today's Village Park area including the current clubhouse & pool complex along with several other associated buildings such as post office & library!

Fox Lake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Fox Lake is located on the Fox River and forms part of the eastern border of Cook County. The Fox River and its namesake creek have been important to local residents for centuries. In 1836, George Washington was visiting Illinois when he met a group of men from the village of Wexford in this same river valley near what is now Fox Lake. Washington impressed them with his knowledge about American rivers and their creeks, which led to him giving the name "Fox Lake" to one of these waterways in that state. In 1888, an act by the General Assembly authorized erection of a lighthouse in honor of Commodore John D. Stockton (1793-1868), who had served as Commandant at Veracruz during Mexico's War (1846-48). The first lightkeeper on duty at this new lighthouse was Mrs. Sarah Fenton Welch (1824-1912). At launch day on October 4th 1889, Assistant Lightkeeper James Ewing manned the Fresnel lens while wife Sarah “Sally” Fenton Welch supervised stewardship from her home belowdecks...... On January 2nd 1902 Lieutenant Commander John Henson relieved Captain James Ewing as Assistant Lightkeeper because Henson had married Sally Fenton Welch; Lt Commander Henson would remain with the lighthouse until it was decommissioned on December 15th 1928................... In 1935-1936 Work Progress Administration employees constructed a dam across portions of both creeks to improve navigation............ By 1946 there were only two residences still extant on Mount Prospect Avenue east side Of Fox Lake..... By 1990 no buildings remained within present boundaries......... Today only Memorial Park remains open along Center Street adjacent to Old Post Office building....... Located adjacent to KFC market are three contributing settler homes dating back to 1871: Two 6 story frame style brick buildings and one 3 story frame style brick building....... In 1898, the company became part of the United States Rubber Company. The company was sold to General Motors in 1947 and finally merged into GM in 1955.
