Fox Lake is a community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1871 as a result of the merger of two small villages, Fox and Slippery Rock. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. Fox Lake is located on the Fox River. The village of Slippery Rock had been merged with that of Fox in 1871. The name for both villages originated from a misnomer: "Slippery Rock" referred to an area where water ran so quickly that it became difficult to hold onto baskets or other objects, while "Fox" referred to the fact that these two villages were adjacent to each other on the banks of the river. In 1892, when Chicago annexed Kane County, Fox Lake became part of this larger municipality and its population rapidly grew due to its location and access to transportation networks within Chicago's boundaries. This growth continued throughout most of the 20th century; by 2000, there were over 10 thousand residents living in Fox Lake. During World War II, many businesses closed their doors because they couldn't find enough workers who could do production necessary for military needs such as tanks and planes. However, due to various factors (such as increased industry competition) local businesses have seen significant growth since then in spite of significant wartime layoffs and economic sanctions following World War II.
