Fox Lake was first settled in 1853. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who died during the American Civil War. In 1903, Fox Lake was renamed for Julius Caesar and it has been its current name ever since.
Fox Lake is a town in Winnebago County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Fox Lake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Fox Lake was John Pritzker who arrived in 1834. He built a cabin on the east side of Fox Lake and named it "Pritzker's Grove." The first post office was established in 1839 and the name changed to "Fox Lake" in 1847. In 1859, the town was moved from its original location to its present site on the west side of Fox River by railroad entrepreneurs George A. Smith and James Henschel. In 1870, as part of a land grant to Abraham Lincoln, Jesse Weems donated 3 acres (1 ha) near present-day Weems Road for use as a public school lot. This donation became known as "Weems Park." In 1911, Reuben Fenton donated 2 more acres (0.8 ha) adjacent to Weems Park for use as an agricultural extension field which became known as "Fenton Field." In 1928, fox hunting began operations at Fenton Field after years of debate between citizens and local politicians over whether or not they should be allowed on private property within city limits
