Fox Lake, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Fox Lake is an agricultural town that produces corn and other crops as well as ammunition for sporting purposes. Ammunition production began in 1856 when a group of men from Decatur, Illinois purchased some land near Fox Lake to start a munitions factory. Ammunition production continued until 1906 when World War I interrupted production. In 1921, the company moved its operations to nearby Rockford and resumed production until it closed in 1979. Today, the company remains inactive but maintains a small museum located within the village of Fox Lake where visitors can explore the history of ammunition production and purchase rounds from time to time.

In 1934, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Corporation and the Fox Lake Ammunition name changed back to Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

Fox Lake is home to the Fox Lake Golf Course and several other businesses. The first settlers in what is now Fox Lake were farmers who arrived from Michigan in 1836. By 1840, they had built some log cabins on the east side of Fox Creek. In 1846, John Denton bought land adjoining Fox Creek from a group of Shawnee Indians for $6 per acre (1/2 mile wide by 2 miles long). He named his new settlement Deerfield because he thought deer would be easier to herd than Indian Chiefs. Denton began farming and sheep raising and became one of the wealthiest men in Kane County. He donated land to build the first schools in Kane County and helped start many local businesses such as paper manufacturing and insurance agency services. His legacy continues today with The John Denton Foundation which provides grants to local organizations that support community service initiatives such as environmental awareness or anti-corruption work

Fox Lake is a small community located in the eastern part of Cook County, Illinois. The name comes from the French word "Foucault" meaning "a flat place where water collects." Fox Lake was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s and 1840s. In 1849, General James K. Polk founded the town of Fox Lake on the banks of Fox River. The town was named for General George Washington's nephew, James K. Polk (1808-1865). From its inception, Fox Lake was a frontier settlement that depended on fur trade for its income. In 1852, Colonel John Slingerland donated land to build a sawmill at Fox Lake. By 1870, fox hunting had become an important economic activity in the town. During this period, many local families employed African American laborers as domestics or cooks in their homes. In 1925, FoxLake merged with neighboring Village of Hamburg to form one large community known as Hamburg-FoxLake-Wabash Township Association Incorporated (Hamburg Township). At this time, there were only five residences in total within the township and only one school
Fox Lake was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in 1792. The settlement was abandoned in 1834 because of the Panic of 1837. The post office at Fox Lake was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907.
