It is bordered by Waukegan to the north and east, Northbrook to the south and west, and Maywood to the northwest. The town was first established in 1847 as a post office called Wildersville. The name changed to Fox Lake in 1875 after John Fenton Fox who donated land for it. In 1908, Fox Lake became a village and was incorporated as such on March 1, 1909. The village had a population of 689 until it merged with neighboring Maywood on January 1, 2009. Fox Lake is notable for its fishing community which has been around since the late 1800s when fishermen from nearby Northbrook started landing their catch here. Today there are more than 20 restaurants in FoxLake that serve local cuisine including German-based Krautkuchen (a type of pancake), Czech-style pivní jalapeño pie, Slovakian-born pálený klúček (a Croatian apple tart), Italianate pizzas made with ground beef and sausage instead of flour or dairy products, as well as duck hunting tournaments during deer season every autumn that attract some of the best shooters in Illinois In addition to its restaurants there are also several convenience stores, two gas stations/convenience stores/GMO grocery store chains., three churches - one independent Baptist and two Roman Catholic - all with full services; one hotel; four schools - high school (Northlake School District #1), middle school (Maywood School District #2), elementary school (Fox Lake Elementary School District #1) - allDistricts have day care; six businesses - five individual businesses and one business group that provides services such as home health aid; four campgrounds totaling 88 sites across nine different types of camping including tenting areas for both adults and youth; three golf courses serving up 12 holes each: eight public teepees outdoors while two within walking distance offer championship level play for those age 10 through 17 years old ($4 per round); seven private creeks flowing through Town limits providing plenty of water opportunities for swimming not only during summer but year round too FoxLake's rich history can be found throughout its various incarnations starting withWildersville where settlers arrived overland from Michigan looking for land they could farm before moving on into what would become Du Page County in 1847 . By 1860 there were 150 residents living at Wildersville comprising farmers , mechanics , blacksmiths & 3 tailors among others fox lake incorporation date November 1st 1909 follows annexation by Maywood less then five weeks later making it one of du page county's fastest growing villages according to unofficial records however official incorporation papers show original name "Wildersville" until organized under new name "FoxLake" due to confusion over state law regarding village names
