Forest Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded on April 12, 1871 by Captain Alfred H. Smith as a small town called Forest Park on the site of what is now the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Forest Park became a city on December 15, 1898. The name "Forest Park" comes from two different locations in Northern Illinois: one near Geneva and another about 20 miles east of today's Forest Park itself. In 1855, General David Dixon renamed a small creek in this general area Clear Creek after Colonel John Marshall Clearwater (1768-1857), an early settler in that area and founder of Springfield Township (now Bloomington). On April 12, 1871, Captain Alfred H. Smith led a group of men from Champaign to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) along what would later become State Road 100 south of Geneva for $5 per acre ($27/km²). This included part of present day Forest Park and land still within present day Geneva Township today. On December 5th, 1898 – less than three weeks before his death – Mayor Emanuel appointed George Wickersham to manage and operate the new City Hall located at 106 N State Road 100 which had been donated by developer Julius Kahnhofft & Sons in memory of Mr. Wickersham’s late father who had played an important role in establishing Forest Park as a community with strong civic values and aspirations In 1908 Rev Jno Palfrey purchased 1/4 mile east of US Highway 60 between US Highways 2 and 3 west of where it crossed Lake Michigan Our Lady Of Charity School opened its doors on this tract providing education for African American children until 1955 when public schools were integrated

Forest Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,752 at the 2010 census. Forest Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is home to the Illinois State Capitol and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The city was platted on June 20, 1871, by John Pemberton and his associates from Peoria Heights. The town site was chosen because it had a deep well that could be used to draw water for irrigation purposes from nearby forests. The first settlers were Germans who built small houses near what is now Fullerton Avenue and Cicero Avenue; these were followed by Poles who arrived in 1873 and erected homes on land east of Fullerton Avenue between Dearborn Street and Vincennes Road. In 1876, when village leaders agreed to allowChicago's first electric streetcar line to run through their town, they named it Forest Park after the grove of trees near which it existed. At first Auto & Electric Ry./ Edison Co.'s tracks ran just south of present-day Fullerton Avenue; but in 1898 they extended them north to Cicero Avenue as part of a new Extension Railway Agreement with Chicago Central Railroad Co.. In 1900 streetcars began running along Dearborn Street from full service south to Cicero Ave., connecting Forest Park with other parts of Chicago. The erection of many large blocks within downtown Forest Park during the 1920s caused much development noise and dust although some beautiful old buildings remain today including: Masonic Temple (now known as "Cook County Courthouse"), brick courthouse building at 309 North La Salle Street (now River Northside Shopping Center), City Hall Annex (later Mayor Richard J. Daley's office), Wright brothers memorial house/ hangar/ schoolhouse complex (300 West Washington Boulevard), Hennepin Furniture Company plant (now Sears Tower) – all before World War II! It wasn't until 1949 that Interstate 95 was projected as an expressway through Forrest Park cutting off much potential development around I-95 exits eastward into Richwood Township then Danville Township then Lawrence township etc.–rendering Forrest Park almost completely unviable for residential or commercial use; however due largely to community activism led by civic organizations such as "The Ikon Club" – Forrest Park has seen resurgence over recent decades with various businesses opening up shop or expanding into adjacent neighborhoods including NoHo/ Near South Side etc.–resulting in ForestPark having passed its most recent census increase since 2000 reaching an impressive 35,752 residents!
The Forest Park region in Illinois was originally known as the Western Reserve. The area now includes parts of Chicago, Decatur, and Bloomington. In 1836, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill creating forest preserves in what is now Forest Park. The state leased land to various companies for a variety of purposes, including logging and farming. By 1865, the Forrest Park Company had acquired 1,500 acres (460 km2) of forestland in Forest Park. The first park was opened to the public in 1868. For many years, Forest Park was one of the most popular areas in Chicago because it was undeveloped and lacked any major attractions or amenities. However, starting around the turn of the century new development began encroaching onForest Park's resources and popularity decreased; by 1912 only 15% of its acreage remained undeveloped. Similarly, much of present-day Forest Park developed primarily as residential neighborhoods during this time period.
