The Forest Park Observatory was established in 1872 as a private research station on the plateau of Mount Prospect, Illinois. It became an official observatory of the United States in 1904. The Observatory is now operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Forest Park Observatory has three main telescopes: the 1.5-meter telescope, the 0.9-meter telescope, and the 3.5-meter telescope. Other telescopes located at the Observatory include a 5-meter reflector telescope, a 2.4-meter reflector telescope, a 1.8-meter Schmidt Telescope, and a 454 kW sunspot radio telescope used for observing solar storms and Cyclone Pam events across Asia Ocean basin

In 1907 two brothers named Harry Houdini were performing at a fairgrounds near present-day Midway Airport when they were arrested by city police on charges of vagrancy because they could not afford to buy tickets for their show. Their arrest set off an investigation that led to cage shows throughout Chicago being outlawed . The brothers became celebrities after their release from prison with performances throughout America . After World War II many people moved into Forest Park from suburbs around Chicago due to high housing prices there
