The park occupies 2 square miles (5 km²) of land on the eastern edge of the city of Chicago. It was donated by developer George Pullman to be a public forest reserve in 1881, after he had purchased all but 1/4 mile (1/2 km²) of its land from other developers. The first people to live in Forest Park were the Potawatomi Indians. They hunted and gathered food near where today's playground and athletic fields are located. On October 11, 1881, President James K. Polk signed an act which created Forest Park as a national forest reserve with $10 million (equivalent to $227 million USD today). The original boundaries included only 1/4 mile (1/2 km²) of present-day Forest Park proper; however, more than three-quarters of it was acquired over time as part of various development projects within what is now known as Chicago neighborhoods: North Lawndale, South Lawndale, Oak Woods / Harvey Hill / Rogers Road / Pulaski Road / Belmont Avenue / Wacker Drive. In 1910s and 1920s many new homes were built in what is now North Lawndale neighborhood on land that would later become part of Forest Park proper; much work on this section took place during World War II when large amounts of metal were needed for munitions production in Illinois' Midwest cities. Afterward many home owners moved away from football stadiums such as Soldier Field or Wrigley Field because they became too noisy for their comfortable suburban lifestyles; these developments are still visible today along Archer Road between Eisenhower Parkway and Lemmon Avenue NW in north-central Forrest Park proper - one block east from current day Cook County Hospital! Forest Park was founded in 1795 by a group of farmers led by George Washington. The park is located on the boundaries of three counties: Cook, Kane and McDonough. The original land for Forest Park was donated by James K. Polk, who also donated the land for McCormick Place.
