Forest Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 47,408 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest in Chicago metropolitan area. The park's boundaries are Griggs Road on the east side and Cicero Avenue on the west side. The land that now constitutes Forest Park was first developed by George Washington Kappler in 1857 as part of his Plan of Organization for Cook County. Kappler wanted to create an agricultural community with easy access to nature and potential markets for his products. He named his development "Forest Park". In 1871, following annexation by Chicago from Lake County,[1] Forest Park became a separate municipality under municipal law. In 1893–1894, due to increasing population growth within Chicago's limits and concerns about water quality caused by lead mining operations in nearby Milwaukee Heights,[2][3] Mayor Richard J. Daley ordered that all public lands withinChicago be dedicated for forest conservation purposes only;[4][5] this included most of what is now Forest Park.[6][7] In 1907–1908 an attempt was made by noted planner Daniel Burnham to create a new urban center around one hundred acres (40 hectares) along Griggs Road between Cicero Avenue and Garfield Boulevard;[8] but no serious progress was made until 1914 when developer John Laughlin purchased half interest in Burnham's project from General Motors Corporation.[9][10] That year Laughlin began developing what would become known as Forest Hills—named after two adjoining properties which he had acquired adjacent to McCormick Place—into one large housing development encompassing nearly three-quarters of a million sq ft (230 hectares). Little progress was made until 1938 when developer Sam Giancana bought into Laughlin's project and rapidly enlarged it with additional buildings totaling over two million sq ft (200 hectares).[11][12]:283 Woodridge Drive—now called Woodridge Towers—was completed in 1941 while Garden City Tower —now known as One GVariant tower number 6—was built later that year.
