The Park was established in 1872 when a group of businessmen and farmers bought land in Forest Park. The original site of the park was on the east side of Forest Avenue, across from present day Northwestern Illinois University. In 1907, the park was enlarged with land on the west side of Forest Avenue. In 1916, the City of Chicago purchased 750 acres (270 hectares) adjoining Forest Park for $1 million. This purchase doubled the size of Forest Park and made it an urbanized area. At this time, gun targets were first introduced to Forest Park as a means to amuse visitors and improve shooting techniques. Gun Targets at Forrest Park began appearing on various plots around town until 1949 when they became a permanent fixture at the park. The target range has been operated by different groups since then, but it is now run by TPBG Incorporated which is located in their current building on Pulaski Road in Forrest Park. TPBG has been keeping guns and ammo stored at their facility since 1954 and provides target practice for members of the public as well as school groups and other organizations throughout Chicagoland area.

From 1916 through 1917, the club used a different rifle, but it is believed that it was acquired from the British military. In 1922, the club changed its name to the Forest Park Rifle and Pistol Club and continued to use this name until 1945 when it again changed its name to The American Legion Gun Club. After World War II, The American Legion Gun Club switched back to using rifles only as target weapons. It operated out of two ranges in Forest Park- one near State Street and one at Prairie Avenue and Redwood Road. During this time period, they also organized various tournaments which were still being held today including the prestigious IPSC world championships which are now known as IPSC America’s Cup Championships.
