Forest Park is a city in Champaign County, Illinois, on the edge of the University of Illinois campus. The population was 24,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Forest Park was founded in 1872 as a small community on land donated by Edwin M. Morton. The original name for Forest Park was "Morton's Grove." The city became a county seat in 1879 and has grown rapidly since then, with annexations from neighboring townships and villages until it reached its current size. In 2000, Forest Park annexed parts of Downers Grove to form an even larger municipality. Forest Park’s rich history can be found throughout its neighborhoods: Elmwood Heights and Oak Lawn are both located within Forest Park; Midtown is home to many businesses and residences; West Side Highway runs through town, providing access to much of downtown; and east of town lies open space known as “The Woods” which offers plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities including hiking, biking, birdwatching, fishing, camping and playing golf. In recent decades there has been an increase in development along portions of I-80 that run through town - one such project being the construction of a new public library branch adjacent to Midtown Plaza shopping center that opened in December 2009. This addition will bring more people into town each day who will have easy access to cultural attractions like the Art Institute of Chicago or Millennium Center while also providing additional parking for local businesses nearby.

The city was founded on October 8, 1867 by General James Robertson and Drury Clark as a result of their efforts to improve transportation links betweenChicago and other towns in Cook County. The first park in Forest Park was the original country estate of Drury Clark which was purchased by General James Robertson on October 8th 1867 for $1,500. In 1870, general John Halleck ordered that all military units within the City limits be relocated to Armour Square near State Street in order to save money on land acquisition costs. As a result of this move some trees were cut down and moved from Armour Square to make way for what would become Forest Park. This event also marked the beginning of a long friendship between General James Robertson and Mayor Richard Jealous which would continue until Jealous' death in 1984. In 1880s two new golf courses were developed adjacent to each other along Prairie Avenue just north of Cicero Road: Oakmont and Willowbrook Golf Clubs respectively – both now closed but still visible from many streets within Forest Park today including North Shore Drive, mostly due to their location next to South Shore Drive where people used to drive for leisure purposes before it opened up as a motorway
