They instead named their park after President James Kinsolving US during his term as president from 1897-1901 (the first African American to serve in that role). pullman believed that Kinsolving had helped improve relations between different groups within society and contributed to racial harmony; this belief also served as inspiration forPullman's later company policy forbidding discrimination against any minority group on its property. In honor of Kinsolving's contributions to society, Pullman dedicated each acre he acquired along South Shore Drive (now Wacker Drive) west of Lake Michigan Avenue to him beginning with his acquisition on July 15, 1902 - an event which has been commemorated annually by planting trees on that sectionof roadway since then known as "Kinsolving Boulevard". Pullman's donation created one of Chicago's most popular parks - now home to more than 50 million visitors per year - and helped make ForestPark one of North America's most popular tourist destinations during its decades-long growth period. The Forest Park area was part of the Township of Hinsdale, and was organized as a FREE COUNTY on December 2, 1837. The first election to this new township took place on November 3, 1838 and James P. Skinner was elected President with 54% of the vote. On October 8, 1840, the Township of Hinsdale merged into the County of Cook.
