Forest Park is a former township located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 5,821 at the 2000 census. It was dissolved on December 1, 2006 by the Illinois General Assembly as part of the larger consolidation of Kane and McHenry Counties. The first settler in Forest Park Township was John Pritzker on February 13, 1836. He and his family were living near what is now the village of Arlington Heights when they discovered wooded hills and fertile soil east of their farmstead. The Pritzkers named their new land "Forest Park". In 1839, Jno. Pritzker married Maria Hagedorn and set out to homestead their land. They built a log cabin which still stands today in what is now Forest Park Township limits. In 1846, James Atherton purchased one-half interest in the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad from its founder Samuel Inskeep for $2,000 cash plus ten thousand shares of stock worth $25 each per share. On October 2nd that year Atherton became the first person to own trackage rights across Cook County into Macon County when he reached an agreement with John Brougham to build a line between Chicago and Decatur Junction (now Elmhurst) on March 30th of that year - this was also before any roads had been built through Kane or McHenry Counties! It wasn't until after Atherton's purchase did anything happen with Forest Park Township - all that happened until1846 was that some settlers established themselves there while others left because it seemed like there would never be enough land available to settled here! Atherton's railroad company continued construction westward but by April 1850 all trackage had been sold off except for about three miles from where Elmhurst now stands due to obstacles such as Native American resistance! In 1850 Charles Wimmer bought two-thirds interest in Atherton's railroad company; this made him president & CEO/manager of both companies! Wimmer began building tracks eastward into present day Kane County but soon realized he needed more land so he pulled up stakes and bought another one-halfinterest in Atherton's railway company from Wimmer's father-in-law for $4,000 cash plus twenty thousand shares worth $30 each per share! This made him manager & CEO/manager again for both companies! However problems started arising again as area farmers didn't want roads passing through their lands so Wimmer decided to sell his railway holdings back to Charles Atherton for just under $10,000 cash only making it 8 years before Forest Park Township existed!! Charles Wimmer donated the manor house on West North Street within present day Arlington Heights which still stands today as one of those pioneer homes in Forest Park Township
Forest Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 57,812 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Chicago and the second most populous city in Illinois after Chicago. Forest Park is also one of the largest cities in Illinois without a suburbs. The first Europeans to visit what is now Forest Park were French fur traders during the 17th century. They named it "Jardin de France" ( Gardens of France). In 1847, General James K. Polk and his army besieged Fort Dearborn on the north bank of Lake Michigan while they invaded Indiana; when they withdrew from that state two days later, they left behind a garrison of 10 men and 2 cannons at Jardin de France (now Mount Greenwood Cemetery). The fort was abandoned soon afterwards because it became too difficult to maintain with so few troops and no artilleryman available to fire on approaching Indian boats. In 1853, John Pritzker built a lumber mill on Menomonee River northwest of present-day Forest Park along what is now West Side Highway 1. This mill operated until 1907 when it burned down due to an arsonist's attempt to destroy evidence of its past operations. In 1909, Pritzker donated land for Forest Park's first public park which he called "Pritzker Open Space". The park had an area of , making it one of the largest public parks in North America at that time. On November 3, 1916 – sixteen years after President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order No. 9204 calling for racial segregation within U.S.–owned property – Forrest Park became part of Chicago when City Council resolution number 611 approved annexation by the City from Cicero Township eastward along Pulaski Road/Upper West Side Drive as well as all remaining land eastward including portions now within Woods Cross subdivision or Manchester Terrace community southwest thereof from Cicero Avenue between those boundaries . . . As Cicero Township included much more wooded acreage outside what would become Forrest Park than did Chicago proper there was some speculation during World War I about whether or not Forrest Park should be annexed intoChicago due primarily to this lack of open space inside Loop business districts but eventually neighborhood groups rallied around their desire for this typeOf open space andrew Carnegie had helped build long before becoming Mayor Richard Daley placed emphasis on developing inner city neighborhoods near McCormick Place downtown
