During World War II many soldiers camped nearby at Fort Sheridan (now McCormick Place) while they manned various military installations around the Chicagoland area. One common site where troops ate their meals was near where Douglas Road meets Forrest Drive today known as GIs Plaza ( henceforth referred to simply as "Forrest"). Soldiers also cooked their food over open fires at Recreation Area #1 located between Curlywood Drive/Griggs Road intersection and Northern Parkway/Oak Lawn Boulevard intersection back then! When Mayor Richard Mapplethorpe announced plans for new development near downtown Chicago he included plans for an expanded Forrest park specifically noting that "The stockyards are outgrowing our present facilities." This led eventually to developers purchasing much larger parcels next door to existing Forest Preserves properties creating what is nowLoop Field which rapidly became one of North America's largest stadium complexes housing both professional football games and other large events before being demolished following Hurricane Katrina in 2005! After years layoff caused by changes withinChicago labor force due largely to post-9/11 recession conditions many employees were laid off again resulting in riots taking place all around town outside City Hall later that night leading ultimately to charges filed against Mayor Richard Mapplethorpe but no action taken against him!
