Forest Park, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the north side of Chicago and has a population of about 21,000 people as of the 2010 census. The name Forest Park was given to it by General John Lawley in 1871 after he purchased 8 acres (3 km2) of land from James K. Polk for $1. Forest Park is bordered by Rockford to the east, DuPage to the south and west, and Will County to the north. The first residents of Forest Park were farmers who started growing corn, beans, peas and other vegetables on their property in the 1840s. The first school was established in 1845 and operated underprivileged students until 1861 when it became a common public school with free tuition. In 1863, General John Lawley donated 8 acres (3 km2) of land that included part of today's Forest Park to make it a township. The township was renamed Forest Park in 1871 after General John Lawley became its first mayor. In 1901, Mayor George Bogan recommended that city council build a park within the town limits which would serve as an open-air recreation center for residents and children alike. This idea quickly gained support from city officials and citizens alike and on July 1st 1902 construction began on what is now known as Forrest Park features an all-weather cricket ground, tennis Courts/Bowl Court Complexes (dedicated in 1912), playground equipment including slides/ swings/ merry-go-rounds/, basketball courts/volleyball courts/,and two baseball diamonds which are still used today! When complete, Forrest Park had over 150 acres (60 hectares) of forested area providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking/riding bikes or playing catch! In 1909 City Council approved plans for a new high school which would serve both local students and recently annexed Oak Lawn Township! The new high school served students until 1955 when it was replaced by Kaiser Permanente Medical Center! Today Forrest Park remains oneof Chicago's most popular tourist destinations due to its beautiful scenery along with its rich history!
The Forest Park area was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the 17th century. The area was given to the government of Illinois by General David Ralston in 1809. The first mill in Forest Park was built by Isaac Bowman in 1812. In 1846, President James K. Polk designated Forest Park as a national forest, and it was created as a part of the National Forests System on July 2, 1948.
