George Leland Finney and taught Kindergarten through 8th grade. A second school building opened in 1870 called the Ladies' Institute which served girls until 1899 when it closed due to financial constraints brought about by rapid population growth and its need for more classrooms than could be provided within the budget set forth by then Board of Education President Dr. Julius Nystrom .
