When Fairview Heights, Illinois was settled in 1833, the community's only knife shop was located on the corner of Wabash and State Streets. In 1850, a new store was built and the name changed to The Cutlery House. Mr. Cook opened his store in 1864 and continued to sell knives until his death in 1971. His son, John Cook Jr., started the business after his father's death. Today, The Cutlery House is one of Fairview Heights' most popular businesses with customers from all over the Chicago area coming to buy knives, samurai swords, hunting knives and other edged weapons. The history of knife sales in Fairview Heights goes back centuries! One of the first known dealers in this community was Tom Prentice who operated a small shop near Harper Hall Cemetery from 1792-1814. He sold both English blades and Native American spears and arrows. In 1847, Captain Jonathan Edwards moved to Fairview Heights from Decatur IL with his family and began selling firearms including pistols (which were not legal at that time) at his home on State Street overlooking downtown Chicago. Captain Edwards soon realized that he could sell better quality knives than anyone else in town so he started making himself a reputation as a top seller of quality knife products for those who wanted them but didn't have room or money for an entire arsenal at home. Captain Edwards’s successors – Elisha Peake (1848-1901), George Snelling (1849-1920), Joshua Hawley (1850-1925), Hiram Sinkler (1851-1927) – continued to sell high quality knives while also expanding their product line to include tools, jewelry boxes and other accessories. It wasn't until around 1915 when John Cook took over ownership of The Cutlery House which has remained its current name ever since - providing customers with beautiful handmade traditional Japanese swords, Samurai Swords & Hunting Knives as well as everyday carry items like pocketknives & kitchen cutters!

Fairview Heights is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Fairview Heights began as a small farming village named after Fairview Woods which lay north of the current town site. By 1871, it had become a bedroom community for high-income Chicagoans and its name was changed to Fairview Township in 1881. In 1925, the township was merged with neighboring Wilmette to form the new city of Chicago; Fairview Heights remained within the new city limits until 1959 when it became an independent municipality under then-Mayor Richard M. Daley's jurisdiction. The first settler in what is now FairVIEW HEIGHTS was John Smeaton who arrived in 1836 from Hartford Connecticut on a ship called "Osprey". Heading northwest towardsChicago he passed through what are now Waukegan and Northbrook on his way to settle near where we stand today on October 15th 1836 Mr Smeaton planned to farm 5 acres with butchered deer and pork but due to lack of water power he never got started . After arriving here he built a log cabin which still stands today as part of our history museum

Fairview Heights was founded in 1847 by George Fairbanks and his wife, Anna. The town was named after Fairbanks' father, who had come to the area as a farmer. The first post office was established in 1848, and the first store opened in 1850. By 1860, Fairview Heights had a population of around 100 people. In 1861, the local school board voted to build a new school on the site of the present-day Community School District #2 building. The $5,000 cost of the project was met by contributions from several surrounding communities. The new building opened in 1865 and soon became known as one of Illinois' most respected educational institutions. In 1888, Fairview Heights incorporated as a village under its own governance system. At that time, it had a population of about 500 residents. By 1902, however,Fairview Heights's population had dwindled to just 100 residents because of factors such as high taxes and limited resources. However, due to initiatives initiated by then-Mayor John Haggerty (D), including efforts to promote economic development within the community and increase access to education for all residents, FairVIEW HEIGHTS has seen resurgence over recent years - today boasting an estimated population nearing 600 residents!
The Fairview Heights community was settled in 1847 by a group of Methodist ministers. The town was named for Reverend Samuel Fairview, an early settler and president of the first Methodist church in Illinois. The town’s original plat included a school, Baptist chapel, sawmill, store and jail. By 1870, the population had increased to about 100 residents and the town formed a city government with a Mayor and Aldermen. In 1892, Fairview Heights became one of the largest municipalities in Cook County when it annexed neighboring Des Plaines.
