Fairview Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized on December 12, 1887, from parts of Park Ridge and Lawndale. Fairview Heights had a population of 792 in 1900 and 1,159 in 1910. The original plat for Fairview Heights called it "Newfair", after Sir John Newbury who donated land to the village. The name "FairVIEW" was given to the community by owners of a large tract near Cooktown who desired to avoid being confused with their hometown of Glenview (now Elgin). In 1909 FairVIEW had a population of 2,534 and 1,878 in 1920-1930; these numbers decreased until 1945 when they reached an all-time low of 914 people. On January 1st 1955 FairVIEW became one hundred percent white when Appling Township merged into Cook County along with other townships withinCook County. On November 5th 1957 referendum voters approved annexing Clearbrook Township which also merged into Cook County on that date creating what is now Elmhurst Township in Cook County

Fairview Heights is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,715 at the 2000 census. Fairview Heights is located in the northwestern part of the city of Chicago. The first person to live in Fairview Heights was Mrs. Sarah Cleveland and her three children who settled there around 1853. By 1870, most of the residents had moved to other towns in Cook County or within Chicago because of low prices for land hereabouts and lack of available water supplies. A few people stayed on until after World War II when they lost their homes to developers or were displaced by new housing developments elsewhere in Cook County. In 1960, Fairview Heights became one of the first municipalities in Illinois to be given a charter by the state legislature which provided for expanded governance and services with more autonomy than what was currently offered by local governments under state law then-existing. In 1984, Mayor Edwin Reisman announced that Fairview Heights would become anurban community with a population over 10,000 as opposed to its current 7,000 occupants due to increased commuting intoChicago from surrounding suburbs as well as suburban development adjacent to and within walking distance ofFairview Heights proper; this led to some opposition from residents who felt their town would decline if it became too large beyond its current boundaries while others saw this potential growth potential as an asset rather than a downside since they could see more opportunities for economic development now that such boundaries were delineated instead of fuzzy lines drawn arbitrarily based on personal preference or nostalgia (see also "What's next for FairVIEW HEIGHTS?"). After much deliberation among elected officials including Reisman himself and community members alike both positive and negative aspects emerged resulting in a planapproved by voters placing limits on future growth without giving away any real estate parcels outright (the so-called "No Growth Zone"). This restriction has been lifted following rezoning applications submitted subsequent to that original ordinance mandating tighter zoning controls). Most recently citizens organized themselves into several committees/groups tasked with carrying out various initiatives designed specifically towards improving life chances within FairVIEW HEIGHTS: from artsy graffiti removal/ Painting & Sculpture events all day every day during summer months free admission no matter what! On weekdays starting at 8am everyone gathers outside City Hall Lawn across from Wrigley Field waiting their turn...to have their name painted on a giant sculpture called "You Are Here" created especially for this event courtesy of local artist extraordinaire Stefanie Kappenberg aka "The Girl Who Could paint anything!" In 1827, the town of Bloomington was established and Fairview Heights became a part of it. In 1853, the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in Fairview Heights and began transporting goods from Chicago to Mount Vernon. This made Fairview Heights one of the most important towns in the area. When World War II started, Fairview Heights saw a lot of activity because so many people were needed in the military. Some of the famous residents of Fairview Heights include Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, Irving Berlin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
