Fairview Heights is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. First settled in 1847 by English immigrants, Fairview Heights became an incorporated village in 1894. The name may come from "a prominent and large tract of wood lying between Cook County and Will County", also called Fair Lawn or Fairfield Township. The first settler in what would become Fairview Heights was John Peebles who arrived with his family in 1847 from England. He founded a farm on the present-day side of Wabash River just west of where the street now begins. The philanthropist died without leaving any children behind so his estate passed through several hands before it was given to Intel cofounder Paul Allen who founded Microsoft Incorporated there in 1975; today Microsoft operates two campuses located within Dearborn Park - one near North Avenue on Michigan Avenue and another near State Street on Lake Street across from Soldier Field - making it one of only a few American companies headquartered outside its original headquarters location (the others being Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Google parent Alphabet N/A).
