Fairview Heights is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,141 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Englewood Cluster of villages in the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Fairview Heights" was given to the community by General David Dixon after he surveyed and named it for his friend, Sir John Fairfield. Dixon had grown up on a large family farm near Mount Greenwood in Cumberland County and became interested in landowning during his boyhood years when he learned that one could own much of what is now Cook County by purchasing strips of land along state lines. He purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of Lake Michigan from Abraham Lincoln in 1846 and named it Prairie du Chien after his home state du Chien, Wisconsin. Dixon's purchase established Fairview Heights as an important center for agricultural production within Cook County because it allowed settlers to purchase large blocks of forested land at low prices with little risk to their investments. This concentration of agriculture led to the development of several notable businesses around Fairview Heights such as Wohlgemuth & Sons Grain Mill, Sears Roebuck & Co., and Illinois Central Railroad Company Yards No. 1-4; these businesses contributed significantly to the growth and prosperity of Fairview Heights over time. The communities located around FairVIEW HEIGHTS were initially developed as small farming villages or hamlets with few resources other than their immediate surroundings which limited access to education and health care opportunities for residents outside their village/hamlet boundaries; however since settlement began expanding outward into adjacent suburban neighborhoods via streetcar line service, these smaller villages have gradually evolved into larger suburban communities with comprehensive planning processes that provide high levels of civic engagement including arts and entertainment programs, parks/ Recreation areas, grocery stores/ restaurants etc.; this has helped make Fairview Heights one Of America’s most vibrant suburban communities which continues To thrive despite challenges faced by many other inner city suburbs across The Country due To falling birthrates & expensive housing costs
The town of Fairview Heights, Illinois was first settled in the early 1800s. The area now known as Fairview Heights was originally part of the Township of Burr Ridge. In 1827, the township was divided into two parts and Fairview Heights became a part of the new village of Burr Ridge. The post office at Fairview Heights operated from 1829 to 1901. In 1907, Burr Ridge merged with neighboring village of Arlington to form the larger city of Wheaton.
