The city was founded in 1881 by John Fairview and his family. In 1903, Henry Ford bought land in Fairview Heights for $1 million to build his first car factory. The city's success led to incorporation as a municipality in 1907 and rapid growth during World War I and II; the population increased from 12,000 to over 100,000 by 1940. However, during the Great Depression Fairview Heights reversed its fortunes and reached an all-time low of 9,500 residents in 1937. Since then it has experienced steady growth with a current population of 23,698 according to the 2010 census.

Fairview Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized on February 14, 1873, and named for Admiral Fairfield Hastings (1784-1851). At the time it consisted of two sections of the town of Sheffield located east of what is now River North and west of Woodlawn Cemetery. On July 1, 1875, both sections were combined into one municipality. On November 15, 1907, Fairview Heights became one of the towns in Cook County that merged with neighboring South Holland to form the city of Chicago. The merger was announced by Mayor John T. Kennedy and Commissioners George Madden and William Norris in a public meeting at which they also proposed that part of Sheffield be annexed to Chicago as well. This annexation would have included land north of Pulaski Road between Sheffield Avenue and Peterson Drive (now Ashland Avenue) while leaving south side between Pulaski Road and Cicero Street unincorporated. The vote to annex Sheffield was 3-1 with Mayor Kennedy casting the deciding vote against annexation because he felt it would increase taxes within Fairview Heights without adding any real value to its community or economy; however Commissioner Madden abstained from voting due to his personal investment in South Holland Township which continued unaffected by the merger process. A new elementary school building opened in 1903 on Wabash Avenue adjacent to Park West High School; this building served as Fairview Heights' first high school from 1903 until 1944 when Stevenson High School opened on Calumet Avenue across from Park West*. In 1943 when Park West closed for World War II purposes all students had to attend Stevenson High School until an open enrollment program began resulting in Stevenson becoming Fairview Heights' only high school through 1959 *. In 1957 when South Holland Township disbanded its own high school system all students had to attend Stevenson until an open enrollment program began resulting in Stevenson becoming Humboldt Grove* (now Morton Grove*) * fairVIEW HEIGHTS SCHOOL DISTRICT
The first settler in Fairview Heights was John L. Goodridge, who arrived in 1837. The town was named for General James K. Polk, the 26th president of the United States. The first post office opened in 1839 and was known as Poseyville. In 1840, a store and blacksmithshop were built on Church Street by Samuel Hodge. In 1846, a Methodist church was built on Maple Street by Rev. Ebenezer Farnsworth. The first school in Fairview Heights opened in 1850 and was known as the East Side Schoolhouse. A grocery store and livery stable were built on West Side Avenue in 1852 by Jno Fenton and Wm Henson Jr., respectively. In 1860, a sawmill was erected on the west side of Middle Lane by Isaac Dutton and it continued to be used until 1903 when it burned down. A gristmill also operated in Fairview Heights between 1865 and 1903). In 1863, there were six families living inFairview Heights: four white people and two slaves (one of whom died during the Civil War). By 1870, there had grown to twelve families living here: eight white people, four black people (two slaves), one Native American person (Hiawatha), six Chinese immigrants (five men and one woman) from Canton China*, one German immigrant (Nathaniel Gehring)*, three Irish immigrants (John Doherty*, John Malone*)*and two Swedes (Anna Gustafsson*).
