Fairview Heights is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Fairview Heights is located on the east side of Chicago and is bordered by Will County to the north, Lake County to the east, and DuPage County to the south. The town was platted in 1871 when German immigrants founded a small community near what is now Ogden Avenue and Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. The name "Fairview" comes from two German words meaning "beautiful view." A post office was established in 1872, and named for Mrs. Sarah Fairbanks (1826-1911), who donated land for the village. The first school opened in 1881; it became known as Harper School until 1938 when it became Parkland High School. In 1907, a lumberyard was built on pioneer land west of Harper Road. This addition helped make Fairview Heights one of Chicagos largest industrial towns during its early years; fairs were an annual event at this time that attracted many businesses and residents to millinery demo meetings at the lumberyard! In 1916, voters approved annexation by Normal University;Normal soon became one of Chicagos most powerful educational institutions with campuses throughout Greater Chicago.
