The first Fairview Heights settlers were people who moved to what is now Fairview Heights from other parts of Cook County during the late 1800s. By 1870, most of the original settler had left for other reasons or because of disease outbreaks that struck their homes. However, some remained and founded a small town called Indian Hill east of present day Fairview Heights on land that they purchased from Native Americans. This small settlement prospered until 1887 when a severe freeze caused many crops to go bad and poverty set in among locals as well as farmers around Fairview Hills due to lack of transportation and access to markets outside of Chicago; this led to increased violence near Indian Hill due to competition for food resources between gangs warring over control over local businesses and residents. In 1899, an act was passed by Congress which provided for the creation of a new government within Cook County named with responsibility for "the betterment" (and eventual annexation) of adjacent townships: "Fairview Heights", including its predecessor Indian Hill; Elmhurst; Hinsdale; Lincolnwood; Morton Grove; North Lawndale; Oak Lawn; Pilsen; South Lawndale ; Westchester Place ; and Yates Township". During its heyday, Fairview Heights was a bustling commercial center with many businesses including banks, grocery stores, flour mills, cotton plantations and tanneries. Its residents were also highly influential within their community and contributed to several important social movements such as abolitionism and women’s rights. Fairview Heights was a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1872 by Paul Fairview and his wife, Eliza. The village had a population of 514 in 1920. Fairview Heights was annexed by Wheeling, West Virginia in 1951.
