On July 6, 1898, artillery fire destroyed the local flour mill located on Elm Street; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of World War 1. The population of Fairview Heights increased rapidly during World War II due to its location near military installations and other wartime activities. In 1940,Fairview Heights became an incorporated city with a mayor and four City Council members; it remained an unincorporated village until 1971 when it became a full-time municipality under state law retroactive to May 1, 1970.

By 1900, most of the initial settlers had departed for other parts of Illinois or moved to other towns within Cook County; however, a few families continued to live and work in Fairview Heights until shortly before its annexation by Chicago in 1924. Until recently, Fairview Heights' only focus has been its small school district which serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; however, plans are underway to build a new high school as well as numerous smaller projects throughout the years that have not yet been completed. Fairview Heights is a village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Fairview Heights was platted in 1871 and named for Reverend John Fairview, an early settler. At that time it consisted of only a small area near where one now walks down Elm Street to reach the schoolhouse which served as their first post office. A store and three homes were built on this land by 1875 when the railroad reached Fairview Heights from Champaign via Elm Street. In 1881, residents of neighboring villages merged to form a new village, First National Bank being its first president. The merger received approval from then-County Clerk Amos Dombrowski andvillage trustees Isaac Myers and George Hennepin who put together $1,000 worth of shares in First National Bank to pay for it’s costs. Fairs in Fairview Heights were first held in 1875. The fairgrounds were originally located on the corner of Elm and Westcott Streets. In 1907, the fairgrounds were moved to their current location on Emerson Avenue. The fairgrounds are currently home to the Emerson Park District.
