In 1892, FairVIEW HEIGHTS SCHOOL DISTRICT was formed to provide educational opportunities for students in the Howard County community. The district served students until its closure in 2003. During its time as a school district, FairVIEW HEIGHTS produced many notable educators including Dr. Harry Laughlin (1907-1998), Dr. Alice Stone Graham (1927-2002), Mr. Don White (1965-2006), Mrs. Betty Sweeney (1969-present), and Ms. Lisa Ferrell (1995-present). Fairview Heights was founded in 1815 by John FairVIEW and his wife, Sarah. The first church in the area was called the Good Shepherd Chapel, which served as a center for religious services and social events until it burned down in 1827. In 1854, a group of Methodist ministers moved to Fairview Heights from Peoria, Illinois and started a new church there. The pastors of this new church were instrumental in helping to create what is now known as the Chicago Methodist Church.
