The Evergreen Park Shooting Protection Act of 1998 was a law in Illinois that makes it illegal tofire a gun in any public place without first obtaining a permit from the police. This law is also known as the Gun Law of Chicago. The act was passed after the 1997 shooting of 14-year-old Dekarai Hudson in Evergreen Park. In 1911, three shots were fired at a dancehall in the park and one person was killed and four others injured. In 1928, an event called “The Great Chicago Shooting” took place in the park where 27 people were shot and thirteen died.
Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 59,824 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Cook County. The name Evergreen Park comes from the large evergreen trees that line the streets and dot the landscape. The first settlers to what is now Evergreen Park were farmers who arrived around 1836. They named their community after Mount Greenwood Cemetery in Boston which was located east of Chicago on Chicago's north side. By 1868, there were over 100 people living in Evergreen Park when it was incorporated as a village. During World War I, soldiers lived and trained at Camp Edwards near present-day North Avenue and Prospect Street in Evergreen Park. After the war ended, many of these soldiers returned to their homes and businesses but a few continued to live and work in camp until 1923 when it closed due to lack of military personnel needed there. In 1925, local businessmen organized an election for trustees for the new public school district that would be created as a result of various mergers across Cook County at that time including Evergreen Park Village and other villages near South Side Lake Michigan Boulevard (now Loop 350). In 1927, Mayor John Puskar appointed Albert Jaffe as director of education for Cook County with responsibility for all schools within our boundaries except those within City Of Chicago; this change opened up much more opportunity for education outside of downtown Chicago than had been available before under Mayor Puskar’s watchmanship or even during his predecessor’s four terms! After years of growth without any major municipal attention save occasional extensions or updates to infrastructure such as sewers or streetlights – despite growing populations adjacent property – voters approved an $11 million bond issue (the largest ever raised by suburb residents) authorizing construction of brand new parkland comprising 1/4 mile wide boulevards running east-west through center city neighborhoods bordering South Side Lake Michigan Boulevard between Harvard Road on one side and Westchester Drive on the other; this land also included acreage previously used by Camp Edwards troops during World War I era training exercises! The parkway was dedicated on October 15th 1928 with ceremonies led by William Ladd (former president & CEO Sears Roebuck) followed by President Franklin D Roosevelt delivering remarks from then First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt! This event marks not only what has been called “the turning point” momentous improvement in urban conditions throughout our county but also significant progressivism inside Illinois government overall! An additional 1/4 mile wide boulevard was added along Northwest Side Parkway extending south from Pearson Airport directly into communities bordering Millennium Drive westward providing yet another pathway connecting DowntownChicago with suburban nicely manicured areas…everlasting examples are still seen today where two streets intersect immediately outside high school gates: Harper Road & Cass Ave NW; Eisenhower Dr & Wabash Ave EAST just west of Wickerham Rd./northwest corner OF Rogers Rd./southwest corner OF Hoyt Rd.—allowing easy access both ways without having to drive down busy arterial streets! And finally Maple Leaf Dr NE/SW extends northwest beyond limits set forth herein borders Indiana St./Wabash Ave., Rushmore Pl., Lenox Rd., etc.—just minutes away from downtown Chicagoland skyline
