Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 52,879 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to many government institutions, including the Chicago Public Library and the University of Chicago. The name "Evergreen" comes from the Evergreens that used to be located near where the city now stands. The first Europeans to visit what is now Evergreen Park were French traders in 1671 and 1672. They named it after a grove of trees that they found on their way from Canada to Lake Michigan. Jesuit missionaries also visited this area in 1780-82; they called it la Prairie du Nord (the North Prairie). In 1824, Congress appropriated $50,000 for a road connecting Chicago with Fort Dearborn on the north shore of Lake Michigan. George Washington was selected as one of two commissioners to build this road. Work began in October 1825 and finished just before Christmas that year. By 1830, Evergreen Park had been established as a village; its first postmaster was James Mott Dodge. In 1835, Dodge donated land east of his house on Kedzie Avenue for what would become Menard Hospital and School Annex; these are today's Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Illinois University campus buildings respectively. In 1868 President Andrew Johnson nominated John Davenport as Secretary of War; Davenport took office on February 1st but resigned soon afterward because he disapproved of Johnson's policies towards Reconstruction SouthAmerica following the American Civil War (see below). On July 4th costumed citizens from all over America came to parade through downtown Chicago in honor of King Cotton during his visit thereto (see here). In 1865 John Haynes produced an innovative report recommending education for freedmen throughout Illinois under public auspices rather than individual white families awarding scholarships like those offered prior to slavery being abolished by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (see here). This report led directly to Brownwood College becoming Lincoln University in 1870s when Governor David Roode transferred all black students there from Alcorn State Normal School (now Alcorn State University) which had closed due liability resulting from Union troops occupying Arlington Heights during the American Civil War! Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 109,853 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Northwestern University and Chicago's most extensive public park system. The first people to live in Evergreen Park were two brothers, Isaac and Jacob Hennepin. Their land had been donated by their father-in-law, Daniel Hennepin. The city of Evanston was founded on Valentine's Day in 1847 by James Kahl and his wife Lucy Kahl. They named their new town after George Washington's plantation near Hyannisport in Massachusetts where they were living at the time. In 1854, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad reached Evanston and began serving Evergreen Park as a suburb of Chicago; it stopped serving Evergreen Park in 1911. The City of Evanston annexed the village of Evergreen Park on December 12, 1903. On May 15, 1912, Mayor John Pappagee announced that Northwestern University would move from its original site south of State Street to a new campus west of Lake Shore Drive within the boundaries of what would become Evergreen Park if all permitted votes were tallied for that day alone; thus starting what would be known as "the Great Northwestern Migration". The university moved into its present location on North Lawndale Avenue on September 17th, 1916. In anticipation of increased student traffic on North Lawndale Avenue (then Dearborn Street), Northwestern built an elaborate double-deck road median between northbound Dearborn Street and southbound Lake Shore Drive which still exists today (known variously as “Northeastern” or “Northwestern” Boulevard). This feature became known as "The Narrows." A large trees/canopy now covers most or all of this section; originally there was only a small area covered with asphalt! On October 29th 1922 Mayor John Pappagee approved plans to build a football stadium on Roosevelt Road just east of Harry S Truman Parkway between Cicero Avenue north and south (now Old busy I-90 exit 78). That same year Cook County granted property developer Edward Bennett permission to build more than 100 homes located along West Irving Road adjacent to then undeveloped Roosevelt Road outside Loop 202 southeast Chicago limits; these homes remain today part of the evergreen park community footprint . On November 5th 1923 Northwestern finally completed construction on its current Athletic Field stadium which seated over 3600 spectators when it opened in 1926 – making it oneofAmerica's largest collegiate stadiums until surpassing Harvard's 64 foot high capacity Belmont Abbey Stadium during 1933–34 . There have been many other events/construction projects at or around Northwestern University throughout its history including: opening up shop at Merchandise Mart Building – 1927 expansion onto South Wacker Drive – 1930 demolition and reconstruction (now occupied by Wells Fargo bank) – 1935 erection and renovation (now used for Amtrak trains) – 1938 dedication ceremonies for newauld Quadrangle building which housed library services cafeteria dining halls classrooms science labs social clubs Andover Science Center addition - 1939 dedication ceremonies for Allis Chalmers Complex additions - 1941 dedication ceremonies for Goodman Research Laboratory addition To date no major renovations or expansions have occurred to this facility since its original construction!
