Smith and it was not until 1879 when the first store opened in what is now Evergreen Park that the community truly began to form. In 1907, the Chicago Board of Trade built a new building on North Avenue just east of Cicero Avenue in what is now Evergreen Park. This gave the community a more centralized location within Cook County and helped make it one of Chicagos most popular communities for home ownership and shopping during this time period. The current incarnation of Evergreen Park began to take shape starting in earnest around 1932 when Gertrude Stein set about making her own little parkette within its borders on West Side Drive between Midway Road and Ashland Avenue. She named it "Eve's Garden" after her friend Alice Bogan who also lived nearby at that time. Eve's Garden quickly became one of Chicagos premiere green spaces with plenty of public benches, trees, flowers, well-manicured gardens and much more! Today you can find remnants of Eve's Garden all throughout various parts of Evergreen Park such as inside Gertrudes former house on Western Ave., as well as near John Lennon Airport (which used to be called "Eve's Field") where many people gather each year for a picnic! Today Eversgarden has evolved into something much bigger than just a small private paradise; rather it has become one large comprehensive ecosystem complete with schools, businesses and homes - features which have been key identifiers for the community since its inception!
