Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,859 at the 2010 census. It part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Evergreen" comes from the nearby Evergreen Oaks Cemetery and its tree-lined streets make up one of Chicago's most forested areas. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Evergreen Park were French traders known as les Noirs who landed on Lake Michigan in 1679. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1778 and founded the first African American church in America here. In 1847, the first public school was opened in what is now Evergreen Park. The park boundaries have been changing ever since then with annexed communities coming and going until it current incarnation was created by annexation of Arlington Heights on April 20, 1954. Arlington Heights had been an agricultural community that supplied produce for local markets; however, when Interstate 95 became available for development south of Roosevelt Road (now Eisenhower Parkway), residents decided to move into the new suburb which would include their homes and businesses within the city limits. By 1961, almost all of Arlington Heights had left for Evergreen Park; only a small percentage remained within city limits when those boundaries were extended to encompass much of north suburban Cook County on April 20th, 1954 under Mayor John Fords leadership – making Evergreen Park one of Chicagos earliest Sun Belt suburbs

Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,701 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Evergreen Park was organized on November 10, 1868 by John A. Logan as a "counterbalance" to Humboldt Park to the south and West Lakeview Village to the north-west. The two villages were adjacent but had no common boundary other than their location within Cook County. In 1871, Logan proposed that both villages be merged into a single town with its own police and fire department; this proposal was refused by the Board of Commissioners because it would have made Evergreen Park an incorporated municipality subject to taxation by Cook County while Humboldt Park remained unincorporated. In 1873, after years of negotiation and design work led by architect George Pullman, the first recorded public meeting for what would become Evergreen Park occurred when representatives from Humboldt Park and Westlake Village met at Pullman's home to discuss plans for a new village on Lake Shore Drive between State Street and Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago Heights. On October 20th, 1875, trustees from both communities voted 7-2 in favor of incorporation under then-current laws which allowed towns with a population over 5 thousand residents to incorporate without voting upon it (the bill allowing incorporation only applied to municipalities with populations over 7 thousand). The first mayor of Evergreen Park was Oscar Siskel who served from December 1st 1870 until his death on July 3rd 1876; he was succeeded by James Fenton who served until 1886 when he also resigned due to illness. Siskel's widow Anna Bickerton continued serve as Mayor until her death in 1912 after serving four terms total. In 1905–06 City Manager Charles Burden recommended that all services within Evergreen park should be centralized under one management system due to increasing costs associated with providing separate services for each community within the park boundaries plus increased demand for parking spaces within said boundaries coupled with ever-growing traffic congestion inside and outside of the park itself caused by rapidly expanding Ward 2 neighborhoods such as Ravenswood Hills (to the west), Edison Hill (to the northwest), North Lawndale (to the east), Englewood Cliffs (to the south) – all growing increasingly affluent thanks largely to suburban growth around Loop 610 South – while simultaneously reducing centralization costs associated with running separate service systems within each community through amalgamation or consolidation including EVERGREEN PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT®, EVERGREEN PARK FIRE Department®, SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 NORTH LAWNDALE School District 2 ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS School District 2Ravenswood Hills school district
Evergreen Park was founded on May 15, 1867 by the City of Chicago as a result of the merging of two previous settlements, Evergreen and Mount Greenwood. The first settlers were John A. Logan and his family. In 1868, the city passed an ordinance providing for a town center in Evergreen Park. On April 3, 1870, the town center was dedicated with Mayor George H. Smith presiding over the event. The first public school in Evergreen Park was opened in1872 by Mrs. Cady Stanton with Wm. Biddle as its superintendent. The school district was formed in 1893 when all of Cook County became one unit under the new Chicago School District law. The park's prominent landmark is The Anglo-Saxon Church (1912), which has been designated a national historic site since 1986.
