Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 57,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Evergreen Park borders Maywood to the south and Northwest Side to the north. The first permanent settler in what is now Evergreen Park was William Hanks, who arrived in 1837 from Kentucky. His family soon moved to a farm on Foster Avenue in what is now North Avenue West. In 1841, Hanks married Maria Jane Cranch and they moved to their current location on Pulaski Road just east of Cicero Avenue. They raised four children: two daughters and two sons who eventually became doctors and teachers; William Hanks Jr., also a doctor; Harry Chapin Chapin Sr.; and John Charles Neumann (1862-1942), an American business magnate who co-founded US Steel Corporation with Andrew Carnegie in 1901. In 1864, James McNamara purchased land west of present day Cicero Ave for $2,000 from David Duchovny (an early investor in US Steel). He Gridley McNamara started mowing lawns on that land until 1865 when he sold it to John Lennon for £210 ($355) after seeing him playing football there with his friend George Harrison. After buying some more land west of Cicero Ave (now part of Millennium Park), McNamara founded Lincolnshire Farms which grew fruits and vegetables before becoming a grocery store chain known as Jamba Juice Chain USA Inc.. McNamara's son Neil Gridley McNamara ran Jamba Juice Chain USA Inc until his death in 1990. In 1925, Harry Chapin bought 10 acres near Present Day Pulaski Rd., then bounded on the east by Wabash Ave., on the west by Dearborn St., but most notably bounded by Lake Michigan shoreline on 4 sides including its southern border - making it one of only three cities or townships within Cook County that were not annexed into Chicago during its great expansion following World War II due largely to political considerations surrounding opposition from Mayor Richard Mapplethorpe à la "Hired Gun" mayoralty etc... He donated this property along with adjoining land located between Wabash Ave./Dearborn St.(between Shoppers Drug Mart & Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Companies Building/the former home of Sears Roebuck & Co.)& Plymouth Plank Road(northwest corner)to Evergreen Park Township Association amending its charter 8/14/1920 thru 12/31/1920 wit charter members: Homer Cummings (President), Albert Einstein (Vice President), Dr Samuel Goudey (Treasurer), Mrs Alice Harmon Whitehead (Secretary). This parcel extended northeasterly 1 mile bordered by Lake Michigan shoreline westerly 2 miles containing present day playgrounds Athletic Fieldhouse built 1941 & Playground equipment 1951 attached thereto reptile house built 1913 Also acreage included lot adjacent lots owned by Julius Rosenwald 1920’s Arthur Ashe played tennis here w/Jimmy Connors 1940’s Forrest Gump 2000’s The original name for this association was “Chicago Heights Country Club” which changed to “Evergreens Club” when Subcommittee On Parks And Recreation Was Created Hearings Held 9/9/1922 By Mr Jesse Untermeyer As To Whether Or Not Evergreens Grounds Could Be Appropriate Name For A New City park District Which Would Include All Of The Street Names Opened Up As Such Additional Street Namespark district No 5 Added 7/1/1978 constituen tOfCityOfChicago

Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 59,326 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. The City of Evergreen Park was incorporated on December 1, 1871. The city grew up around the site of what is now Western Avenue and North Pulaski Road in Homestead Heights. The area had been inhabited by the Potawatomi for centuries before white settlers arrived in the mid-19th century. By 1851, there were about 100 people living in Evergreen Park. In 1871, when it became an independent municipality, Evergreen Park had a population of just six people. In 1870–71, three men from Cook County named John Atherton (1827–1902), George Jekyll (1839–1920), and Hiram Sibley (1847–1925) started to build a small wagonroad through central Illinois called the I-Parks main line or Jackson Trail that would connect Chicago with points east and south. They named their new town after General James Kapp’s old home at Arlington Heights near Chicago’s Dearborn Street and State Street (now Wabash Avenue). When they finished building their road, they realized that they could not get anyone to come live there so they sold all their land except for a few acres near what is now Northwestern Ave./Northwest Side Drive/Wabash Ave.–West Side Drive today to Daniel Haggerty Sr., one of Chicagos early entrepreneurs who founded DHL Global Express mail services out of his family farm north of downtownChicago in 1865 . This event helped start what is now known as Evergreen Park as an agricultural center with many large farms such as Haggerty Farms becoming major employers here during the first part of this 20th century."
