The community was named for Evergreen Hill, a nearby hill that is also the site of a botanical garden and the home of two United States presidents: John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. The first post office in Evergreen Park opened on December 12, 1892. Evergreen Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers of Evergreen Park were French Canadian immigrants who arrived in 1829. They founded a trading post and village on the banks of the Chicago River. The post was abandoned around 1836, but settlement continued until 1847 when the Illinois General Assembly passed an act creating Cook County. This created a new township within Cook County and gave to it authority over its own affairs. The village became an incorporated city on November 2, 1898 with a population of 20,000 people. On January 1, 1903, as part of Mayor James Mott's campaign for mayoralty, he suggested that all local government functions be placed within the newly created City Hall Building at 95 North LaSalle Street (now demolished). In 1907-1908 tax rates were raised from 3¢ per $100 to 5¢ per $100 to fund construction of what would become known as "the Loop" expressway connecting downtown Chicago with points north and east. In 1912 Evergreen Park merged with two other townships in Cook County: Hinsdale and Westchester to form one large municipality which became known as "Cook County". From 1916 through 1947 Evergreen Park was under state control; however during World War II it came under military jurisdiction due to its location between Chicago and Milwaukee along Lake Michigan shorelines (itself subject to naval gunfire fire). 1945 saw the opening of Interstate 75 through Evergreen Park cutting off much needed trade with nearby cities like Hammondsborg and Waukegan while also serving as a major transportation artery linking eastern Illinois with suburban Chicagoland Galesburg Plainfield Evanston Naperville Rockford Joliet Aurora Kaneohe Waveland Homewood Lockport Crossroads Newton South Bend Matteson Arlington Heights During these years many businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford automobiles dealership etc shuttered their doors or moved out altogether leaving only those that could maintain high levels of business activity sustained by ever increasing usage fees levied by developers against their properties
Evergreen Park was founded on November 7, 1871, by the Chicago General Addison Company. The company had been organized to develop a new town in western Cook County. The first settlers were white men and women from Illinois who bought land east of the Chicago River. They named their new community Evergreen because of the trees that lined the banks of the river.
