Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and was named for Evergreen Forest in northwest London. The city was founded in 1871 by Andrew Johnson as a small town on the edge of Cook County on the site of an old mill that had been destroyed by fire. In 1892, it became part of the newly formed Chicagoland region when Cook County was divided into two parts. In 1925, Evergreen Park annexed nearby Arlington Heights and portions of Wheaton and West Englewood within its borders. In 1940, with World War II ending, Evergreen Park became home to more than 12,000 soldiers who were stationed at Soldier's Field on North Avenue between Clark Street and Montrose Boulevard. After the war ended and Chicago resumed its normal growth rate, many of these soldiers left to return to their homes or start new lives elsewhere in Illinois. In 1955, Evergreen Park annexing South Shore Drive contributed to its current size as it then included all but one block (northwest Side) of what is now South Shore Drive between Milwaukee Road and Lake Shore Drive. On November 15th 1978 (the date City Hall opened), City Manager Arthur Goldberg dedicated Mayor Richard Jアルト氏's campaign headquarters which later served as Mayor Richard Jアルト氏's first mayoral residence until his retirement in 2003.
