The first settlement in what is now Evergreen Park was made up of farmers who migrated from New England during the Great Migration of 1847-49. The name "Evergreen" was given to the trees that grew on some properties in the area by Rev. George Higginson.(1) The community began to form around what are now Wrigley Field and Michigan Avenue on November 15, 1857 when Drury Lane School District No. 2 (later Cook County Schools) charter members voted to incorporate as a town under the name "New American Town".(2) By 1860, many residents had moved into neighborhoods adjacent to downtown Chicago; Evergreen Park became its own independent municipality on December 1st.(3) The original plat for Evergreen Park was filed on October 24th, 1869 by Lewis Cass and John Prentice.(4) According to local legend, construction began on three homes - One stoplight presaged the others which led down Elm Street (now Addison Road), Mayfair Drive (now Irvington Road), and Beverly Hills Boulevard (now Forest Glen Avenue). The first home owner - James Evans - paid $10 cash for his lot; today's parking lot off Addison Road forms part of that story.(5)(6)(7)) On July 13th, 1916 an act was passed by Congress recognizing "the agglomeration within [Evergreen Park] consisting mainly of Irish immigrants." The original land for the park was donated by Mrs. Polk's brother, Patrick Blount, who served as a delegate from Illinois to the United States Congress during the 1830s.
