Daley named Evergreen Park one of his top five priorities for revitalization within the city limits of Chicago. Many businesses have been opened up within the past few decades such as Applebees restaurant and Starbucks coffee shop which are located just off North Avenue in Evergreen Park proper.

Evergreen Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Evergreen" comes from two sources: Englishman Sir George Everingham (1676-1743), who donated land for the village and also built an evergreen tree on his property; and Finnish occupational surname Veturi (from "veto", meaning "to cut"). The first settler in what would become Evergreen Park was John Prentice in 1836. He and his wife, Fanny Northrop, came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with their three children and started a small farm near Hometown Lake. They named their farm home "Prentice's Grove." In 1840, pioneer Isaac Norris bought land adjacent to Prentice's Grove and established the first store in what would become Evergreen Park. Norris' store became one of the most important businesses in the village during its early years. Norris also purchased a sawmill which he used to make lumber for buildings and other items needed by settlers. By 1851, many of the families living around Hometown Lake had settled in what would become Evergreen Park; some even moved upriver to better opportunities on the Mississippi River side of town. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Evergreen Park proper - more than any other community within Cook County at that time. In 1871, James Wetherill founded Wetherill & Company mercantile business on State Street between Clark Street and Cicero Avenue which soon became one of Chicago's most significant commercial areas. Wetherill & Company soon became one of Illinois' largest commercial enterprises with branches throughout Cook County as well as outlying counties east of Chicago limits.[1] In 1928/9 Wetherill sold his interest in company to Jerald Cushman who continued to operate it until its absorption into Sears Holdings Corporation in 1971.
