Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first recorded mention of Evergreen Park was in 1795 when Major James Kieft and his men explored the area for possible fur trade objectives. The first white settler in Evergreen Park was James Prentice who bought land from the Peoria natives on October 3, 1813. John Stephenson became one of the earliest settlers in what is now Evergreen Park on December 15, 1838. He founded Stevenson's Store which still stands today on Wabash Avenue north of Foster Road. Stephenson also built a home on the current site of Goodyear High School (now part of Roosevelt University). John Atherton established himself as an explorer and trader along Lake Michigan's western shoreline in 1837-1839 before moving to what is now Elmhurst and settling there with his family in 1840. In 1846, Atherton sold most of his holdings to Captain George Dearborn who renamed it Dearborn Heights after himself and moved his family into their new home until he sold them all back to Atherton two years later. In 1865, John Paulding bought 2 acres (0 hectares) northeast of present day Goodyear High School from General George Armstrong Custer for $5 per acre ($140 per km²). He donated this land to Illinois State Normal University (ISNU), then known as Northwestern State Teachers' College (later Northwestern University). After ISNU relocated from Evanston to Urbana-Champaign in 1888, Northwestern merged with ISNU becoming Northwestern Illinois College (NIC) under Mary Roberts Ransom's administration in 1893. NIC became Evergreen Park Community College District No 2 on May 1, 1978 following a referendum by voters there regarding school district status; evergreenparkccd@aol dot com was registered with accreditation by Northwest Commission On Colleges & Universities on November 5, 1982 (). Today Evergreen Park CCD offers programs leading up to and includingDoctoral level study through its Institute Of Technology - Engineering And Science program located off its main campus at 333 Neland Drive NW just east of I-90/I-94 exit 43A (). Evergreen Park has experienced rapid growth over recent decades due to suburban development within Cook County coupled with expanding enrollment at various colleges situated within easy reach such as Northwestern Illinois College / ISNU neighboring Elmhurst neighborhood - making it one OF THE fastest growing communities IN AMERICA! Evergreen Park, IL was once a thriving community of over eighty thousand people. The town was located on the banks of the Illinois River, and it boasted a variety of businesses and cultural activities. The communities near Evergreen Park were founded in 1847 as part of the large towns along the river that grew up during the Republic period. The region became very prosperous thanks to its location on one of the most important trading routes between Europe and America. By 1850, however, many of these towns had died out due to natural disasters or political unrest. In 1857, John Pritzker purchased land adjacent to what is now Evergreen Park from the government for $5 million. Pritzker was an entrepreneur who had developed various successful businesses in Chicago at this time. He decided to move his family to Illinois and create a new community based on his business ideas. This investment would later prove disastrous; by 1860, Pritzker’s company had failed and he was bankrupt again. Despite this debacle, Pritzker decided to continue with his plans for Evergreen Park; he began construction on what is now known as the Plaza Towers complex – an upscale residential area that still occupies much of its original footprint today. The project quickly went bankrupt yet again but Pritzker managed to recover through innovative marketing techniques and by creating jobs for local residents. Today, Evergreen Park is one of Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods but its history remains incredibly rich!
Evergreen Park was originally part of the Town of Chicago. It was organized on November 3, 1871 as a result of the organization of Cook County into four wards. The town was named for Evergreen Grove in Woodstock, New York. The first post office in Evergreen Park opened on December 1, 1872. The first store in the town was built by Pemberton and Associates.
