Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Evergreen Park were French explorers who explored the region in 1671 and 1672. In 1795, General James K. Polk founded what became known as Polk's Prairie Colony in what is now Southeast Side of Chicago. The right-of-way for a road through this area was purchased by John Hockaday from the government on February 14, 1837 and named after him as part of bequest from his father Elijah Hockaday. In 1868, John Leland bought 5 acres (20,000 m²) of land adjoining the Des Plaines River north of present day Loop Road for $1 per acre (0.50 per km²). This parcel became known as "Leland's Forest". Leland had acquired it for lumber purposes and used it for growing maize and other crops until 1881 when he sold it to Amos Kendall for cash only without any trees having been cut down. The first house built in Evergreen Park was probably built by Amos Kendall on this site around 1881 or 1882. In 1902, Drury Lane Gardens opened adjacent to Wabash Avenue east of State Street in Evanston Township; this was one of two parks in Evanston Township (the other being Oak Woods). It remained open until 1955 when it closed due to lack of funding due to suburbanization within Northwestern Illinois; Automobiles then began driving into Evanston Township which caused most park attractions to close as well including Drury Lane Gardens which reopened on October 1st 1955 with new exhibits and facilities designed by American Greetings Corporation head editor Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings . On July 12th 1907 an act authorizing the erection of a brick church at 9700 North Washington Boulevard was passed by the state legislature at its regular session held at Springfield Armory.. Reverend JOSEPH GILMORE officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony that same day with Mayor OF SPRINGFIELD HARVEY WALKER serving as honorary trustee.. The church cornerstone was laid on September 3rd 1907 by RevdGilmore with assistance from members OF THE FIRST UNITED CHURCH RACES AND COOPERATIVE COUNCIL member SAMUEL MORTON . On November 8th 1922 RevdGilmore left office after 14 years service when his successor WILLIAM EMMONS took over but kept all services except Sunday morning services alive until 1933 when he also retired effective November 8th 1933 because Of ill health; Services resumed April 10th 1934 under WILLIAM PEARSON who served until his death October 15th 1942 aged 80 years.. Reverend JOHN SULLIVAN officiated during special services conducted May 6th 1951 honoring RevdJohn Sullivan who had preceded RevdJohn Sullivan Sr.. Reverend JOHN SULLIVAN continued officiating during special services conducted December 12th 1961 honoring RevDJohnSullivanJr.. On January 11TH 1984 Reverend JOHN SULLIVAN died suddenly after fourteen years continuous service...Funeral Service Held At First United ChurchRaces And Cooperative Clubhouse Thereon With Reception At South Side Presbyterian Church Next Day... In 1814, Captain James Cook discovered New Zealand when sailing through its waters and started calling it Polynesia after his own country of Scotland; this gave rise to the idea that various parts of the world were divided into regions ruled by different countries named after geographical features.
