Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,512 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago and one of the five most populous cities in Illinois. The University of Chicago's main campus is located in Evergreen Park. Evergreen Park was founded by John Hays and his brother Amos Hays on land that now includes much of what is today Evergreen Park and Glenview. John Hays negotiated with the local landowners to purchase property from them for $2 per acre (0.10 guilders). In 1836, he donated 24 acres (9 ha) to the village of Glendale for use as a public square and parkland called "Hays' Grove". This area served as the nucleus of what later became Evergreen Park. In 1868, several brothers pooled their resources together to buy 724 acres (269 ha) north of present-day Griggs Road for $8 per acre (3 guilders). This included land that would later become part of Evanston Township, which was incorporated as a village in 1887. When Evanston Township changed its boundaries in 1907, some land within Glendale were transferred to it and renamed Evergreen Park while others were annexed into Cook County; these changes left Evergreen Park with just over 1 square mile (2 km²) on its eastern border and 3 square miles (10 km²) on its western border. The first post office opened in 1870 at 248 North Dearborn Street; it closed two years later because mail arrived by boat instead of wagon through Evanston Junction Ferry Terminal on Lake Michigan. The first store owner was Wm Winchester who opened a store at 4th Avenue & South Side Street.. In 1872 James Cushing established a flour mill on Damen River near present day Garfield Boulevard & Niles Road; this mill continued production until 1922 when it converted to an electric power plant producing steam turbines that produced electricity until 1957. Evergreen Park is an incorporated town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name of the town comes from a grove of trees near the park's boundaries. The first settlers in Evergreen Park were two families who arrived during the early 1800s on a farm south of present-day Elmhurst Avenue and west of Dyke Road. In 1837, John Richardson organized a farmers' meeting at his home to discuss merging several hundred acre tracts into one large farmstead. Richardson and others laid out a street grid for their new community and named it after a grove of trees located east of present-day Perry Road. The early years of Evergreen Park were difficult due to its location on the edge of what was then known as swampy land that was used by Native Americans for hunting, fishing, and burial purposes. However, over time developers began to arrive in large numbers and by 1830 most residents had relocated to other parts of Cook County or moved away altogether. Some people did manage to stay but many more bought out their holdings within a few years because they found farming too difficult or there was no good market for their products outside what they knew already existed in their own township. In 1836 Isaac Aspinwall purchased 3 acres (1 km2) southwest of wherePresent day Elmhurst Avenue meets Dyke Road from Nicholas Pappas; Aspinwall renamed his parcel "Evergreen". By 1840 Aspinwall had developed some stores and homes with about 50 residents living there including himself, wife Sarah Jane(née Richards), four children: Jameson (1839–1902), Mary Ann (1841–1900), Anna Sophia (1845–1909), and John -all born before he acquired the property which he called "Evergreen". From 1840 until 1860 Evergreen Park consisted mainly of farms with cattle pastures scattered around some modest buildings such as churches, schools etc., but no mill or sawmill; lumbering activity took place only on occasion when tree limbs became available from nearby woodlands which were being chopped down for firewood by local farmers during wintertime.(see map below). It should be noted that this period also saw major growth in railroad travel through Cook County due to opening up new territory westward since Lake Michigan formed). Due economic conditions changed with increased manufacturing activity coming online during this era some people decided it would make more sense not just to move away from agricultural dependence but also take advantageof opportunities opened up by fast transportation through railroads…. these days many locals refer back nostalgicallyto those pioneering days when life revolved around subsistence agriculture…………….. In 1867 coalminer James Sennett discovered coal reserves on behalf OFeather Green between Peoria Street & Wacker Drive – this led directly to industry becoming dominant in Evergreen Park 10 years later! Coalmining brought heavy loads of men and equipment into town which caused lots cf development problems as streets became clogged with traffic! A number Of businesses sprang up catering specificallyto miners like breweries/wineries etc.: hardware store/grocery store; blacksmith shop/mechanic shop; post office; bakery/ restaurant etc.; all while resources become scarce leading evermore rapid growth…………………………….
