The city became an important center for the manufacturing of artillery and munitions. Gunners in Chicago used Hats as part of their overall protective gear. The Evergreen Park Rifle Association was founded in 1892. The organization met at the home of Dr. John Pemberton, a member of the board of directors for the Chicago armory. The first meeting was held on October 20th and 21st. A committee was formed to determine what type of hat to wear for the meeting and it was decided that a rifleman's hat would be appropriate. That same year, the association purchased its first gun, a .22-caliber revolver from John Wessels. In 1895, the association purchased two shotguns from Samuel Harnisch and Julius Kuhnbeck. In 1896, it purchased four rifles from Amos Kapp and Augustus Herrick. In 1897, it made its first donation to charity when it contributed $100 to Hull House Charity Organization. In 1899, after purchasing three pistols from Nathan Sellers, the association acquired its eleventh firearm: a .25-caliber revolver bought from Elisha Goodrich and David Jurgensen in 1892. In 1901, after purchasing two shotguns from George Capps and Solomon Kittredge, the association acquired its twelfth firearm: a shotgun bought from Adolphus Peck in 1893. The rifles acquisitions continued through 1902 with purchases of two others each: an 8mm automatic pistol (1896) and an 11mm Automatic Pistol (1901). It also made donations totaling $343 that year to various charities across Cook County including Hull House Charity Organization ($236), St Joseph’s Orphanage($142), Fordham University School of Medicine($60), St Ignatius Loyola High School ($27) & Holy Cross Hospital($21).

Among renters there were 10%, higher than for homeownership rates across all categories combined (%27%). However, they have continued to be manufactured intermittently throughout various periods ever since then by various companies including NRA (National Rifle Association) and other organizations who believe in their importance as symbols of Second Amendment education and history preservation
