Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 87,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Evergreen Park was made by Captain John Smith and his men on March 20, 1795 while they were exploring the area near present day Lake Michigan. In 1802, General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased an tract of land south of Dearborn Street and east of State Street for $5 per acre. He named it "Forrest's Grove". What is now Evergreen Park was created when the eastern end of present day North Avenue (now Irvington Road) wasaligned with present-day South Avenue (now West Side Highway). The western end of North Avenue remained unaltered until 1892 when it became Jackson Boulevard. On July 12, 1893, Congress passed an act incorporating and establishing Chicago as a city; Evergreen Park was one of its original wards. In 1899, real estate developers Edward Bennett and Alfred Pritzker purchased two lots located between Irvington Road and Jackson Boulevard for $10 per foot from Gustavus Wirths who had just built South Side Elevated Railway Company's tracks to reach downtown from the north side. After years of planning and construction, Pritzker's Drive-in Theatre opened in 1925 on this site which would become known as "Pritzker Plaza". The drive-in theaters located along Lake Shore Drive gradually disappeared during the late 1940s through early 1950s when movie attendance tapered off due to television competition from home video devices like VCRs and DVD players. In 1955, Niles Rockwell donated land adjacent to Armoury Road on which modern day Northwestern University has been constructed since 1931—the first university building in Illinois live above ground level on a parkland campus outside of Chicago proper! In 1955–1956 Harold Iger developed what are now called "Iger Place" across from Northwestern University in what once were Armstrong Recreation Field boundaries northwest of today's Regency Ballroom complex - predecessor to today’s HubSpot Campus! In addition to being home to Northwestern University – one half mile away – Iger Place also hosted Sears Tower between 1956-1960 as well as Ford Field acrossing Archer Road between 1960-1964 before that stadium underwent renovations that doubled its seating capacity! Today Iger Place lies vacant although access remains available via ramps from Halsted Street onto Armoury Road just northeast of current day Iger Hall! Today Evergreen Park ranks among the most ethnically diverse cities in America with more than 90% people identifying themselves as black or African American according to2010 Census data; however white residents make up less than 10% percentangry all together despite extensive gentrification throughout recent decades!
