Evanston is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. Evanston was founded in 1892 as a small town on the east side of Chicago. It became a city in 1903. Evanston is home to Northwestern University and has been known for its strong engineering and scientific communities since it began as an agricultural center with few resources. In 1916 the city built what is now Northwestern's first football stadium, Memorial Stadium. The following year Evanston unveiled its first municipal water system which served all of the city and still serves today as one of Northwestern's main sources of drinking water. On November 20, 1927, Mayor John Hare announced that Evanston would become an independent City with authority to levy taxes and make its own decisions regarding public health and welfare within limits prescribed by the State of Illinois.[1] Evanston enjoyed some success during World War II with its production of aircraft parts such as fighter jet engines and tanks. However, throughout much of the war period black Americans were actively discriminated against in Evanston by both military officials and civilians who thought that they belonged to any other race than their own; this culminated in a sit-in campaign by African American students at Northwestern University in 1942 which ended with their expulsion from campus[2]. This experience led directly to later anti-discrimination protests on Northwestern's campuses throughout the 1960s,[3] culminating finally in passage of landmark legislation Racial Equality Act (1964) which prohibited discrimination on university campuses nationwide. The postwar era for Evanston was marked by economic stagnation until the early 1970s when new businesses starting up throughout downtown quickly filled demand for housing units that could be bought or leased through voucher programs administered byBTI Properties Incorporated (now real estate giant RE/MAX). With rapidly increasing racial diversity beginning to emerge across Chicago during this time period - including steady growth among African American residents - many people proclaimed "Evanston had arrived".[4][5]Indeed, over ensuing decades there have been numerous redevelopment projects undertaken throughout downtown Evanstons skyline - most notably lakefront retail areas such as Michigan Avenue Station (now known as Union Station), Kenwood Village Town Center (now called Millennium Park), North Lawndale Neighborhood Market plaza & shops west of Wacker Drive (now called Lincoln Square), Ravenswood Manor / Oak Lawn neighborhood annexed into town via annexation referendum in 2003,[6][7][8][9] while also several high-rise apartment buildings have been constructed along Dearborn Street near Masonic Temple – becoming perhaps one of Chicago's most liveable neighborhoods today[10].

By 1920 there were over 1,000 residents living within walking distance of downtown Evanston – now known as Midtown – making it easy for people to get around town without having to take public transportation or drive long distances. Professional services began to grow rapidly here: dentists opened their clinics downtown while optometrists set up shop along South State Street; architects designed new homes near Park Avenue and Third Street; printers printed newspapers near Dearborn Street and North State Street; packers delivered goods directly to consumers on North Market Street between Clark and Douglas Streets today known as Dearborn Place!
