Evanston is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,814 at the 2010 census. Evanston is the county seat of Cook County. It was founded on December 12, 1847 by WILLIAM HENRY EDWARD ALLISON as an agricultural village named for his uncle and namesake, Evanston Township in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The first settler in what would become Evanston was JOHN WAYNE MASON who arrived from Virginia on November 3, 1837. He built the first home on the present site of Southport Road and east of State Street. Mason's house remain today as part of Northwestern University's Museum Campus. In 1847 WILBUR WHITE became the second settler in what would become Evanston when he moved to a farm on the east side of North Avenue near State Street. White's farm still stands today and is known as North Park (now Addison Ave.). In 1850 JOSEPH CRAWFORD settled near West Side Highway and Dearborn Avenue; Crawford donated land for what would become Northwestern University. By 1860 there were over 60 homes and businesses in downtown Evanston with a population of 350 people. The town charter was granted on April 14, 1865 by Mayor John Peebles after being passed through both houses of the Illinois General Assembly without debate (see below). A rail line called the Chicago & Northwestern Railway had been proposed from Lockport to Arlington Heights but never constructed because of disagreements over routes between Chicago and Milwaukee; it instead ran through Bloomington via West Side Highway and north to Lake Michigan via Shore Drive (and then across country to Minneapolis). On October 17, 1904 Mayor Peebles announced that funds had been raised for a new railroad line from downtown Chicago to northwest suburban Evanston which would run along State Street from Glenwood Springs south until it reached Ridgefield Road northeast of Wilson Park before continuing northeast along Ridgefield Rd to its junction with Western Ave outside Of Wilson Park - this line became known as "The Northwestern" Line because it connected Northwestern University with Milwaukee at their current location just north of Union Station! This led directly to Northwestern becoming one of America's largest universities! On May 1st 1905-the day following America's entry into World War I-Evanston residents convened a special meeting held at City Hall where they voted 9-0-to establish an official armed forces militia unit known as "The First National Guard" made up entirelyof civilians! This marks the first time such an act has ever taken place within any municipality in America!! After World War I ended there were no more hostilities ensuing but much discussion took place about what type or size military should be established given that now everyone knew how important WWI had been! The vote resulted in disbanding all civilian militias including "The First National Guard". On February 20th 1927 Mayor James Norris announced that he was amending city ordinance #532 which required all public buildings including schools be heated during winter weather conditions! On March 6th 1927 schoolchildren participated in a large parade down North Side Highway escorted by mounted police while heating blankets were distributed to those not able to attend warmups inside City Hall! motherfucking winters are real deal now days!!!
