Evanston, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 81,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Evanston is located on the west side of Chicago, bordered by Lake Michigan to its north and west, and Park Ridge to its south and east. The first Europeans to visit what is now Evanston were French traders traveling through the area in 1683-84. By 2000, Evanston was home to over 100,000 residents within walking distance of most businesses and services found throughout downtown Chicago On July 1st 2005, Northwestern University became a public university which greatly increased Evanston's presence as an educational destination as well as attracting corporate headquarters situated nearby including Sears Holdings Corporation (now Kmart) along with many other large employers like DuPont (now Monsanto), AIG Financial Services Division (now JPMorgan Chase & Co.), Ford Motor Company (later part of Chrysler Group LLC), Philips Electronics NV (then Siemens AG), Allstate Insurance Companies Inc., candy maker Hershey Unitek AG (later Kraft Foods Inc.), United Technologies Corporation ( later Pratt & Whitney Aircraft) among others In terms of job market concentration there are few if any other major employers located within walking distance while Downtown Chicago remains highly populated with significant concentrations of banks, hospitals and retail stores

They raised six children here before moving to Decatur, Illinois in 1857 where they operated a grocery store and mined coal until 1861 when they moved to what is now Northwestern Park Avenue. In 1865 they founded Northwestern Memorial Hospital which became Northwestern University; it remains one of America's leading private universities today. Evanston experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to Chicago and its manufacturing base which generated jobs for locals as well as immigrants who came to work at Wernher von Braun's Nazi rocket research facility at Rockwood Arsenal near Evanston (now part of Greenfield). After the war ended, Evanston experienced an economic boom with many new businesses opening up including several banks, shopping malls, and high-rise apartments courtesy of developers such as Harry Macklowe and Leslie Snell (the founder of Sears Holdings). This prosperity slowed down after the stock market crash of 1929 but rebounded following World War II with low unemployment rates and strong job growth throughout suburbanChicago until 1970s when suburban housing prices began rising rapidly which caused further job losses within downtownEvanston until 2000s when there was some renewed promise for revitalization led by Mayor Richard Moseley after he won re-election in 2006 thanks largely to increased investment by downtown businesses such as Allstate Travelers Insurance Company which moved into Exchange Place mall vacated by Jardine & Mathews LLP before that year's November election underscoring continuing vitality within downtown while more recent development along Lake Shore Drive has restored much lost fabric from earlier decades
